If you are concerned, you could lay a blaket over the cab and run the strap over the roof.

I did this by myself using a jackstand on each the driver and passenger floorpans, a 4x4 (board not truck ) across the stands and a ratchet strap looped over the 4x4 and around the tranny through the shifter hole. worked well, quite stable and I was able to adjust the tranny height via the ratchet from underneath the truck. Super method for the reinstallation, helpful for the take out. Not my idea BTW, saw it in a pic somewhere, maybe here.

I have two inches of body lift and was able to get to the two top tranny bolts using extensions long enough to reach the shift hole. I was able to remove them with an impact from the cab this way, way more comfortable than from the engine bay and way faster, but may not be possible without the BL.

If you don't have it all back together, go ahead and replace the rear main seal while the tranny is off, cheap part might as well do it now.

haha im not, im thinking about it when i replace my clutch. so how is this done?

Is the strap just so you can "slide" the tranny back instead of dropping it?

you know, I thought I'd done some strange, and dangerous things before, but I don't think you could get me to climb underneath a transmission knowing it's dangling from the interior grab handles

that just... just doesn't seem right...

What about throwing on a heavier flywheel while you've got the tranny out of the way? Think of it, instant diesel-like torque, almost.

Ricky, my offer of the tranny jack still holds. I can even drop it off at your house.

You dont want this to fall on your chest...

Good luck!

It's finished.

Robb I missed your phone call this morning about the tranny jack but had already rented one for 30$ through Monday. Sorry about that. I do still need to hook up with you on that steering wheel and soft top.

I don't know what that noise was that drove me to do this in the first place but it's gone now. The clutch and pressure plate that came out were in pretty good shape although all the metal was rust pitted like crazy. The throw out bearing was really really loose internally and the pilot bearing was just a mess.

With the little bit of shifting I did in the garage it feels a hell of a lot better, doesn't make any noises and I no longer have to fight to get the rig into gear. I'll be doing a test wheeling trip tomorrow to make sure everything works. Next week my new bushings from Marlin Crawler will be here and that should help clean up the rest of the shifter slop. Oh and while I was under there I removed that silly sway-bar and tossed it.

I had hoped to get to the IACV this weekend but this clutch job has worn me out. I'm going to drink a beer and relax for a little while.

It was a clutch job. Pictures of the removal and install would be about as interesting as pictures of grass. Besides I still don't own a camera.

I'm going to install a multi-friction clutch when I remove my motor and do a rebuild, and you can bet there will be pictures of it but that's just the way I am
