Starting issue.. 1992 pickup 3vze, auto.
Hi all, having issues with starting my truck.
first off I’ll go over the recent issues and repairs…
It had been sluggish starting for a little while, replaced the battery and seemed fine for a bit. Driving home one night every light on the dash came on… beings as I needed it back on the road next day I just tested the first thing that came to mind, the alternator… removed the positive cable and it immediately died, simple enough got a new alternator next day. Put it in and it ran fine. Later that day stopped at a gas station and got back in, it started fine, backed up and it died. Started searching the internet and checked the efi relay. The starter relay was the same so I swapped them. Ran fine back home. Next morning it clicked first and second time I turned the key, started fine third time. Went to town and shut it off and it wouldn’t start back. Removed the starter relay and used a jumper wire to jump terminals 87 & 30… started right up.
thats the only way I can start it now.
got a new relay and still no start, tested it and came back same as the old one.
did some testing with a multimeter.
battery checked out at 12-14 volts.
terminal 87 to 30 reads the same as the battery.
terminal 86 to 85 reads 2ish volts.
ignition switch checks out.
tested load drop on the battery and relay terminals- checked out.
checked neutral safety switch- works properly as far as I’ve tested it.
thinking about replacing the control wire and the ground then removing the starter and testing it this weekend…
Am I headed in the right direction? Tia

Give this thread a shot see if it helps

Also, since you replaced the alternator has the dash lights came back on??
So I was having the same issue and adding a separate starter relay as explained in the thread I linked fixed it but the fact that it died while running may be something else or a second issue??

Cool, that’s a normal indicator to replace the alternator so I would take that off the plate and concentrate on the no start. When I was having the issue it would sometimes click, sometimes nothing, sometimes fine for weeks, rinse and repeat. Haven’t had an issue since adding a separate relay as explained in the thread
Good luck, report back your findings
