My 86' 4runner speed sensor in the trany. has gone bad. Does anyone know where I can get one, and is it hard to change out????

 

Toyota may be a good source, if you cannot find one at a local yard.

Its super easy to change out, just pull the 12mm bolt and it will pop right out.

Yes, but your speed sensor is in a different location, and it may also be caused by the speedo itself going haywire.

 

WHAT "speed sensor" does a '86 4Rnr have in the tranny?

Cable-driven speedo, right? Sensor in instrument cluster for CruiseControl, right? What am I missing?

No.

The speed sensor/speed sender is the gear drive unit in the t-case that drives the speedo cable that drives the speedo itself to tell you how fast you are going, and turn the odometer.

It has nothing to do with the ECT portion of an auto trans.

 

There is a speed sensor #2 on the tranny on the driver side, if it is faulty, you get code # 61. It is not on the transfer case, it's near the harness for the shift solenoids enter the tranny. Speed sensor #1 is in the instrument cluster.

 

Oh! We call that the speedometer-cable-drive-gear. ;-)

(I meant "ECT" to refer to the entire automatic transmission - Electronically Controlled Transmission - the location of Speed Sensor #2.)

 

This thread is a godsend, especially your diagram “4Runnerx3”! Thanks! But I have a new twist on this topic. I have a 1990 4Runner V6 4x4 automatic. My speedometer & odometer stopped working simultaneously a few months ago. Everything was fine for awhile until recently when I was driving on the highway and it seemed to go into neutral. The engine revved but the gears wouldn’t catch. I pulled over, turned off the ignition, re-started the car and it ran again. Now it seems to shift gears at odd (wrong) times while it “runs”, meaning that it will get me where I’m going for awhile until a certain moment after driving where it seems to slip into neutral all over again, and the cycle repeats. My 4Runner has all of the following symptoms:
speedometer/odometer not working at all; O/D light flashes on and off sporadically; sometimes shifts itself into neutral while driving, and won’t go back into gear until I turn the car off, then back on again. Shifts oddly when it actually is going through the gears.
Am I correct in assuming it’s the speed sensor and/or speedometer cable? I have done a TON of research, and I THINK I have narrowed the problem down to the speed sensor. However, my research also hints that there is a separate speedometer cable. Are they the same part or 2 separate parts? Would either or both cause my 4Runner’s symptoms?
“4Runnerx3”, your diagram doesn’t refer to a speedometer cable, so now I’m especially curious. I got under the vehicle and, after looking at your diagram, I think I’ve found the No.2 speed sensor, but now I’m thinking it might also be one of the solenoids. To help me clarify this, can someone let me know where the speed sensor wires lead to? The part I see has wires going into other wires covered by a sheath, then leading over the top of the tranny where they dissappear, and I can’t see where it connects. “Deathcougar’s” post leads me to believe that it leads to the speedometer itself. Is that right? I appreciate any help and any additional diagrams or drawings (even bad drawings if you got em’!). I’m hoping to fix this myself because I’m just as broke as everyone else. Is that realistic? Is it a tough job? Am I even right in my diagnosis? Thanks everyone (anyone!).
