Ask your question in a separate thread. It's possible that is what is clunking, but I'd bet it's probably a tie rod.

Dont overlook steering stops. They will make an ugly noise anytime the wheel is turned full, be it left or right and the front end either lifts or dips while its turned fully. A dab of grease ont he arches located on the lower control arm should do it. There is little plastic buttons that goes on the ends of the stops, leave em off, grease the arches. They just pop back off before you know it.

I too had a very nice experience with the recall work. I dropped by the dealer by my house on friday afternoon, found that the head gasket recall had been done back in 1998 before I owned it, and the relay rod had not been done. Took it in saturday at 7:30am and they had it done by 11am. It does handle much better with the new rod and alignment, and they didn't even try to sell me any other services. I'm impressed.

Andy.

Littlerunner, sorry to hear about your tech. I assume "lost" means deceased, not permanently disabled and no longer able to work for you? Sorry to hear about that. 23 yrs is a long time. I have been a tech for quite a while, on yr 19 now at the same store. I actually was headed for aerospace machinist. In fact, I was for quite a while. But it was mass overtime, fulfill contract, laid off. It gets old. Thanks for the kind offer. If I was thinking about moving over there, I'd consider your offer for sure. Kentucky, isnt that Daniel Boone area, Cumberland Gap etc. I'm an avid off roader also like your former employee. But own mostly motorcycles, do own one quad, its a large 4WD utility type (more like a tractor and not a race machine) warn winch etc and at 600 lbs, its light compared to them now and I give it lots of respect.

And for the others reading this, sorry to hijack this thread. Back to the regular program now!

I made the appointment for my 1994 P/U..and mentioned the alignment and the parts man ..said " we don't do a full alignment on the vehicle all we do is change the recalled part.." I was a little dissapointed with this answer and I explained to him that the recall should include this based on the information I been reading...so he reffered me to the service manager...and I asked him and he said "ohh sure it includes a toe adjustment"..so I left it at that for now..the truck is getting a new longblock installed at the moment looking at it on the lift it looks like all OEM parts on the front end but it seems tight..the truck has 76,000 miles on it...I'll post some pics when it's done..

I'm not sure if I should go to another dealership or not..I noticed some post on here by a Certified Toyota Tech (toyota_mdt_tech) any and all guidance regarding how to handle this matter is greatly appreciated..The truck isn't a pile..It's actually clean and not beat on...thanks in advance

Spoiler, we do an alignment and the factory pays us for it. A clean rig like yours, will usually only mean a toe adjustment, but does include caster and camber as long as its doable. (this is for those who add suspension lifts and the eccentrics can no longer go the amount needed to get it corrected) but the relay rod technically only changes the toe.

Well I finally got off my butt and tried to get this done. Went in last week or the appt. Got a call later in the day (to be fair to dealer they had called right away in the morning but I never got the message) saying they did not have tie rods in stock so they couldn't do it. Bummed...so I called around to see if I could get aftermarket ones and use those instead. Called about five days later to the dealer and to my surprise they had gotten new tie rods in. So another appt. Just got off the phone with them and they are saying I need new idler and pitman arm. I informed them about the part #'s for a rebuild after saying they could not be re-built. So I am currently waiting to see what they are going to say. My problem is that I am leaving in four weeks from ME to AK (driving) and I need to get all of this taken care off, but $400 for the idler & pitman arm seems pretty steep. Any advice guys? It looks like the idler rebuild looks pretty straightforward, but not sure what to do with the pitman arm (just get a new one?).
Thanks

My advice is to read the entire thread. Myself and some others have gotten the idler and pitman arms covered under the recall.

Read the entire thread 2x....I realize you had gotten yours paid for (correct me if I am wrong, but didn't you have to pay initially and then got Toyota corporate to re-imburse you?). I went ahead and just paid for it-I don't have time to re-build the idler arm (and after it's live of living in the NE-it probably would not have been worth it anyway). Heck at least I have all new steering stuff (tie rods and & alignment were done for free as it should have been). Thanks!

Correct - I paid, then ToyotaUSA paid me back (because the dealer wouldn't). I was hoping Toyota had further instructed the dealers of the option to be more consistent, because with the much better service people are getting recently, it appears they have changed something...

Well I have spent an hour and a half reading this 18 page forum cause i just got my recall notification. Im 17 and dont know a whole lot about cars but sure have learned alot on here. I was kinda hesitant on going to the dealership for the fear of being pressured into something i dont need, but cause of my hour and a half reading and everybodys responses and questions anwsered Im much more confident and going to get an appointment set up.. So I just wanted to say thanks!

My idler arm only cost about $15 & 15-20 minutes of my time to rebuild. You don't even have to take it loose from the relay rod, just unbolt it at the top (so it will come apart & allow you to get to the bushings) & then unbolt the body of it from the frame.

i have a 94 4wd pu that was affected by the recall. the dealership was great about getting it in fixed and aligned. in and out in 3 hours. the mechanic pointed out a few other parts that were worn but didn't try to sell me anything. i have nothing but good to say about this experience at ensign toyota honda in Logan Utah.
