toyota wants to charge me 800 to adjust my 3vze valves. ill deal with the ticking sounds instead

 

Like I said in my original post, This motor is supposed to be a replacement, not sure if it was new or reman. But either way its only supposed to have 46,000 on it

 

Mine sounds like that too. My dad is constantly bugging me about how it sounds like diesel (he's a domestic guy, so anything he can do to talk down about an import..you know the type..don't worry I'm trying to convert him). My truck had a reman put in it before I bought it, and has about 40,000 miles on it now. It's been noisy since the day I bought it, it worried me for a while. I had a valve adjustment done last year, and I believe it's about as quiet as it'll ever be now...which is pretty damn noisy. I don't worry about it anymore cuz she runs like a top.

 

OK SORRY MISSED THAT Anyway the lifters may need adjusting/shims an could be the timeing chain tensioner has broke or losen an the chain is rubbing the chain cover sorry on spelling. i missed school that day

 

Rebuild is a very loose term. Some people think that replacing all of the gaskets is considered a full engine rebuild, so don't assume anything. There are several causes for ticking besides a valve adjustment.

1) Worn valve adjusting screws that cause the valve clearances to change with each movement. It will be impossible to correctly set the valve clearance under these conditions.

2) Worn out spacer between #2 & 3, causing a misalignment in geometry.

3) Worn rocker arm pads. Most of the time you can have them machined, but you risk damaging the head gasket when removing the rocker arm shafts.


Also, it's well known that the stock spec is a little on the loose side for the rocker arm adjustment. I've heard of people using adjustments as tight as .006/.009 with a hot engine. I set mine at .007 .011 with the engine COLD.

By the way, my 84 is dead silent with no valve noise what-so-ever. Yes, it's possible!!

Well my receipt that came with the folder of paperworks and hundreds of receipts shows a replacment motor was dropped in at 200,000. It wasnt done at a dealership so I dont know anything about the motor put in other then it was def a little pricey for it to be a junkyard motor. My exhuast leak is def getting worse, I just havent found the exact leak yet. Hopefully I can get it fixed and see how bad this tick really is

 

Can you expound on that spacer? What were your symptoms before you installed them, and what was the outcome?

I only had to replace the adjuster studs, not the spacers.

Speaking of spacers, in 1987 Toyota recalled my truck for the spacers and they were replaced at that time. I don't know what material they're made out of but they're bronze in color. They still look fine after all of these years and miles. For some odd reason it seems that only a small handful of people ever got that memo though.

Did the dealership use the original manifold? If so i was told they come off warped and do not seat right when put back on.

As far as the question asked... No the dealership did not use the manidold cause I said pretty specific that a dealership didnt install the motor in that truck. Installed plenty of manifolds on Yotas without leaks... ::Shakes Head:: But that was 5 vehicles ago

 

haha someone brought it back to life....

 

It ended up just needing a valve job from hell... Now my current Yota on the other had had the timing chain fun... As the common driver side guide breaking happened. Its got all metal guides now

 

back when i bought my Toyota it sounded like a desil, the previous owner had to change the timing chain cover and timing chain and that dident change eneything, since it had 245,000+ miles on it i fully rebuilt it had the crank polished, block checked, rods checked, put all new gaskets, new pistons, oil pump, water pump, bearings.and after that the noise ended up being that my crank bearings were toast and it dident have oil pressure so idk if you if u have a dummy light or a wet gauge that u could elminate that as i possibility but saying it sounded like a desil is exlactley what i had. and now it hasent sounded like that at all. so idk
