Seems turbo pistons are deeper dished. My pistons are very shallow dished but they're aftermarket.

Would having the older style head, and dished pistons have anything to do with lower compression? Like I said I'm not 100 percent sure, but my instincts tell me that the head with the larger cylinder cutouts is what is on my truck. I wonder if this whole mess is a compound of a bunch of issues.

so I guess its possible they put a turbo head on it. But I am not sure what to look for on the differences.

86-94 22r/22re

81-85 22r/22re

It seems that maybe another owner down the line could have done an engine swap for an older 22re, and when the guy I bought it off of had it rebuilt they could have put in the pistons for the newer 22re? The ones in mine are without a doubt the ones in the top pic, and those being paired with an older head could create issues I would imagine.

nope turbo and non-turbo pistons are the same, the difference is in the head.

the above photo is of the pre and post 85 pistons.

here is a difference between the pre and post style head:

old style head

new style head

yes it definately would. and I guess that is plausible for someone doing a head swap and did not have any clue what the heck they were doing haha.

But I am not 100% sure if the old style head would bolt onto the new style or not. My gut says yes though.

Do you there any distinguishable marks on the exterior of the head and block that would tell me what I have?

the shape of the exhaust ports. and looks to be some extra bolt hols as well. And to me it kinda looks like the head around the spark plug holes are rounded on the 85-95 and squared off on the 81-84. see below photo.

No new and older heads are specific to tall deck or short deck blocks. I always get the two confused. The newer has the saturn (planet) like mark on it.

Some rebuild kits have one style of piston for all years.

^^^^ that don't make sense, they would produce different compression ratios. please school me which kits.

Yeah, they were cheaper kits. Will have to think hard. Read a post about it a few years back when I was contemplating rebuild vrs long block.

I don't see anywhere in this add that differentiates between years. Don't see how as several other components are different.

There is a difference as turbo pistons were forged.

If you did not have the throttle open all the way( you said it was closed) the test wont be accurate. It will be lower cold also. If your battery is low (engine turning over slow) that will give lower results too.
You can have good compression and still be burning oil from your oil rings not seating and, or worn valve guide seals.

If it puffs blue smoke on start up and at high vacuum( decelerating) its your valve guide seals, if its smoking all the time its your rings or a combo. Thats a rough rule of thumb( its usually preety accurate).

You said the cylinders looked smooth.

You can burn alot of oil through worn valve guide seals alone.

Forged vs cast won't affect the compression ratio. You can put forged pistons into a 22r/22re engine.

I may be confused, which isn't uncommon. http://www.toysport.com/Technical%20...tech_notes.htm the way this article states dish out for the 22tre had me thinking that there is a difference. Yep, i was assuming.

Wow what an interesting thread this has become, I have to go do some Xmas shopping today, but tomorrow, I'm going to redo the compression test, and inspect that head, hopefully that will make some sense of all of this, or just confuse things further for me. Thanks for all of the feedback here, this is turning out to be quite informant for me. I plan on following up on this thread, so when I end up repairing this 22re, Ill do a write up and get some pics unless I end up just throwing in a new 22re.

ok looking more into this I decided to email the guy.

In the description it says

“Please state your engine year and which sizes you need for your Pistons, Rings, Rod and Main Bearings in the Paypal note box when making payment. Engine kits can not be shipped without this information.”

Once we have the information we supply you with the correct kit.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to call toll free Monday-Friday 8am-5pm EST @ 1-800-422-6022 or local @ 1-973-684-1500. You can also email me brianb@promarengine.com
