it also makes somewhat of a reference to the install instructions. DTH website doesn't have a downloadable one, I will keep diging to see if I can find it.

 

At our smog checks the techs look like maybe they are 18 so I don't think they receive very much training. I've never had to smog check an older vehicle though. if you can prove your header is legal then I agree that should be good enough. Good luck.

 

bottom line is that the HAI is not a pollution control device. And technically it's still there as long as the original air intake is there. It just doesn't have the tube or the shield. I'd be willing to bet since its a header it adds more heat to the engine bay allowing the HAI to still work even though the heat riser isn't installed.

I don't see how those youngins even qualify to even work there. They obviously have no more than 2 years qualified vehicle experience. And have obviously other than maybe a highschool auto shop class, not exactly qualify-able schooling. Not to say I do but, I am 35 and have been driving since I was 16. Working on my own vehicles just about that long as well.

 

You're right, the fsm lists hai purpose as to improve driveability when cold. So it's not directly related to reducing pollution. But it is still a part of the emissions control system (according to fsm) so as far as inspection is concerned they might want to see it. I'm just glad I have never had to deal with emissions for my 87. It sounds like a major pain.

 

yea i will for sure. and i agree on the experience thing. although at the chevron in town im pretty sure everyone is over 21 or something. thing is though, most of em are the type that are into ricers. one of them has a pos honda civic with some stupid paint job with flames that changes in the light. one of the guys there is into trucks though. hes always asking me, when you gonna sas that thing? lol so hopefully he does it

 

I can see oil change places, but not someone that is doing emissions or safety checks. I know I wouldn't trust an 18 year old to say my brakes or what not is good or not. Unless it's one of my kids in which I had personally taught since they were 10 lol.

Yes some of those 18 year olds may have been taught the same way, but it's the perception of someone waking off the street as well. Not to say you can have an idiot 30 year old working these places either, but.......

if you look on the parts list it mentions the hot air pickup. Which looks to be a tube that might insert into the original location that the hose would attach to. No mention of it in the install procedure though. Just in the parts list and the photo of the kit. No mention of the heat-shield either. Just to remove the exhaust manifold.

 

the only thing that i can see it helping with is closing the chock faster since it runs richer when cold till its warm so then the heat from the header reduces the time therefore cutting down on pollutants. but this is just my take on it. but i would also aregue the fact that it is carb approved and doesnt have provisions for the heat shield.

 

Like I said earlier it all depends on the tech you get some are trained more then others but if they do fail you for missing the tube from the header to the intake. You can argue all you want but the bar will side with the tech even if you show that the header is approved it still has to have the emission devices like the tube.

 

if the bar sides with a stupid tech and still fail a CARB approved header, that's when you contact the manufacture. I am sure they will deal with the bar. As it will affect their sales and they didn't pay the State of California for nothing to get their header approved. But I would make sure you at least have that heat riser tube that should have come with the kit.

ok nevermind. the smog tech said that the EO number is not the CARB number, but i just got off the phone with doug thorley and they said it IS the CARB # and the smog tech didnt know what he was talking about.

 

So THAT'S what that extra little tube on the air cleaner is about. Sounds like it'd be a good thing for me to fix too, what with being in the frozen north.

Is it true that I've heard some Cali emissions techs are so stupid they fail people for not having a CEL when their vehicle wasn't designed to have one? Could've sworn I read on here that some poor bugger kept failing because of that.

I'm just glad that (for reasons unrelated to my truck) I had to "move" to an area which doesn't have emissions testing, Ontario likes to use Cali emissions guidelines as the baseline.
