Slapping/Clanking

1988 Automatic 4runner. 22R-E

Recently my 4runner developed a slapping noise when i put it in gear. the idol is a bit high so it jumps a bit when put in D and especially in reverse or lower gears. Its like some sort of clank or something, hard to descrive, just sounds like there is alot of slack on the driveshaft then it just tightens. The U-joints are both good though so if anyone can suggest something i would be very thankful?

Probably bad u-joints. Just replace them all if you end up doing it. I'd strongly suggest replacing the center bearing at the same time if have one. Get the driveshaft balanced too.

Reduce you idle to 800-900 RPM's. Harshly engaging the trans into gear will reduce its overall life expectancy, not to mention the driveshaft and differential.
