Should I use "high mileage" oil?

Hello all,

About to do another oil change on my 86 carbureted 22R 2wd long bed pickup. It runs like a clock and has 76K miles on it. It leaks nothing, but burns a little as I have to add a little after putting on miles.

I have never used oil such as below, but they say it helps aging seals with special conditioners, etc...

I currently use quality 10/30W oil of whatever reputable brand is on sale. Should I stay with this or move to these high mileage oils?

Thanks,
Julian

Do you have an oil leak from the engine seals?
If you don't have any seal leaks, then you don't need high mileage oils
If you want, add some ATP AT-205 as it's a seal seal conditioner. not a seal sweller.
I'd keep using what has worked so far. Regular oil changes are the key to longevity.

Joe-

No leaks observed on the engine or elsewhere. The truck sits in the driveway and there is not a spot of oil under it from anywhere at all. I change the oil every 6 months/5000 miles or so. I cannot quantify the oil usage, but it seems fairly minimal and I have been putting many more miles on it lately. I just recalled seeing these high mileage oils on the shelf, and thought I'd ask if they were appropriate given the overall mileage on the truck and the fact that another oil change will be coming in the near future.

Thanks!

Julian

Mine 86 is the same with 482K. I do 5000 mile changes. No leaks. I don't burn 1/4 of a quart between changes.

From what I've read, the main reason for high mileage oils is they have seal conditioners to prevent and/or stop seal leaks. I read they swell the seals not real condition them. Some cases the swelling cause more leaking. The ATP AT-205 actually conditions the seals not swells them. It gets top recommendations. If and when you notice some oil you might add some. Until then,it sounds like you are doing every thing right. Keep using qualitiy oil filers as well.

If you had seals that were allowing oil to get by you would see leakage somewhere. The one exception is valve stem seals, but you would see blue smoke out the tail pipe.
In lieu of leaks that most likely culprit would be the piston rings. A leak down test would give you much more interesting data, but you could try adding a cleaner to your oil to see if that helps. The oiling rings on the piston can get gunked up and varnished over time and it's possible to free them up. Just be prepared to do another oil change a few hundred miles later to get the cleaner out. I like Rislone for a cleaner, but I know those who swear by Seafoam.
An oil that is thicker does help with the issue, but that carries it's own set of disadvantages. More resistance that'll affect mpg, decreased ability to dissipate heat. etc
