Shifter issues.
Hey everyone, I'm sort of new here and was wondering if anyone could help me out with this issue I have with my 92 yota pick-up. (22-re/5-speed/2wd)
Heres my problem. a while back, I noticed that the shifting on the truck felt kind of loose and not precise. Now the fourth gear does not stay in and when I move the car into fourth, it feel really loose and does not stay in unless I held it. It used to just pop out from time to time now it just goes straight out if i let it go when driving. I've read on this forum that it may be the shifter bushing/ seating. I wanted to check it myself, but I couldn't get the shift boot off. Is there way I can take it off? It looks like it was stapled into the carpet.

First, buy a new plastic bushing/seat from Marlin Crawler, cheap, easy, and you won't regret it, huge improvement.
Now, when you get your parts, you can mess around with the boots, I had to "stretch" my carpet to access the four bolts holding down the boot plate, gets much easier from there.
Biggest hassle was removing shifter, I used a towel to save some skin and a needle-nose pliers.
Be very careful after you remove the shifter, your rubber bushing is most likely in a gazillion pieces and can then drop right down into the tranny.
Good Luck!

do a search, theres a bunch of threads with tips. basically you need to stretch (or cut if it wont stretch enough) the carpet to get to the 4 bolts holding the plate thats connected to the boot down. after that you unscrew the shifter knob, pull the boot and plate off, and then you'll see the trans where the shifter goes in.

When the engine is fully warmed up, the temp gauge still barely moves. its always on the line on Cold, i havent change anything as for the heater, I'm not really sure. I know theres a heater, but not sure if its working, due to the So. Cal fires + its hot through out the day, I haven't really thought about using it.

Well you will need to verify it is heating up first , take temp of coolant to verify it is getting warm or I am sure you can determine that by touching even - if motor is getting hot then the gauge or the sending unit is bad or a wiring problem as well , have you checked to see if the wire at the sending uit is dis-connected , it may be as simple as that .

Temp Gauge
Run it for 10 minutes without the Radiator cap off , and stick your finger in it , if it is hot thats a good thing - then run your heat and make sure thats working (winter coming)
If you do that and its all hot then you would have to track down your temp sending unit and make sure its plugged in and if it is then you need to check the gauge , just ground the wire to the block that is hooked up to the sending unit and have someone watch gauge - it should go full scale if I am correct .
If the meter does work when you ground the wire connected to it then your sending unit is toast

oh yeah, the bushing has been replaced, and it was basically gone, and as for the heater, it did work, but it wasn't really hot, but warm air came out when i turned it on.

Temperature Gauge
Other than that you may also want to replace your t-stat because after 10 minutes that motor should have been hot to the point you could not keep your finger in coolant , if it was then just replace sending unit and then see what gauge tells you , if really low after replacing sending unit then maybe your T-stat is stuck open and needs to be replaced .
