shifter button stuck

when its in park, i cant push the shifter button down to shift into drive. i can hear a little tick noise in the steering column, when i try to push it down. so i end up having to force it into drive. can this be fixed? is it electrical?

Ermm,, I believe your Shift Lock system is working properly. Try stepping on the brake before attempting to depress the shift knob, and it should release the shift knob. If you do this 'after' you turn the engine off, you can usually hear a little 'click' when you push on the brake pedal. That's the Shift Lock disengaging.

My daughter had the same question on her 99 model Camry and it puzzled me for a bit, too. My instruction, when I learned to drive ,was to always put my foot on the brake when I turned the ignition to start the vehicle. Then leave it on the brake as I put the vehicle into Drive. It was second nature to me, so I have not had this situation.
