Seatbelt Exchange???

Seatbelt Exchange???
........Does anyone know if I can just switch out my 88 4runner belts up front with newer ones from a 96 that actually retract? The new ones apparently are hooked to an explosive charge for setting them during a wreck but I would assume I might be able to dismantle that???? Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks....TIM
