Im looking for the seal that goes on the steering column where it passes through the firewall. I ordered what I thought (and the parts people at my dealer thought) was the correct part, but come to find out what I ordered is the plate that bolts to the firewall, the seal I need bolts to that plate. It is a rubber seal with a small frame around it that bolts to this plate with two bolts. My stock one is shot, and mud comes in through the hole when I am wheeling (I found out when I hit a mud puddle and my feet and legs got covered in mud). I can't seem to find the part number, does anybody have any idea?

The dealer should have a break down picture of the column and related parts on there computer. Are they not able to locate this seal ?.

The dealer can only find the plate, not the seal. Their diagrams aren't detailed enough, they are missing parts. If you look at my other thread in this section it is regarding part of the weatherstripping for the door, and it doesn't exist on the diagrams. There are certain parts that seem to be impossible to get, and its frustrating because I need them, they are rubber and my truck is 20 years old, so the rubber is dried up.

If its in good condition let me know, I would definitely be interested in it.

 

Called a different dealer, the guy found it. 45292-35050 I just ordered from toyotapartscheap.com.

To revive an old thread, I changed this seal out this weekend, as mine looked like that of the OP. Big difference in noise resonating from the engine bay! Well worth it for me...

 

I too need to replace the seal and I found a how too with 80 series land cruisers on another forum, but they have different set up than the trucks. Did a search on the 1986-95 4runner & Truck and this thread is all I found.

Do I undo the bolt under the dash (Arrow pointing too 1st pic) AND do I undo the single bolt next to steering box (arrow pointing too) and they will come apart by sliding the shaft one way or the other?
OR do I take apart the rag joint (arrow pointing too) just above that bolt and the bolt under the dash? which is the best way to do it. I will mark and index the shafts attachment points with a sharpie before dis-assembly.

Pretty self explanatory...disconnect the shaft and slide it out of the firewall.

I did it!!!! got the dust seal installed, and was not that hard at all I thought it would be. Here is the procedure from start to finish.

1st is to have front wheels straight and then bungee the steering wheel, hooked the hook under the seat.



2nd is to unbolt the bolt connecting the join to the steering shaft after marking it with a sharpie.



3rd is slide back plastic cover.




4th is to mark the shaft and rag joint and remover the 2 bolts and nuts on the rag joint.





5th slide shaft out from the firewall and clean the area where the seal rides, you can tell the paint is wore out in groves and I took 600 sandpaper and stripped it down to bare metal in that small area so not to tear up the new seal and greased it up.

6th removed the cover that protects the area around firewall and unbolt old dust seal.

7th Put grease inside the new seal where shaft will ride. and install where old one was, Don't tighten the new seal 2 bolts till the end!!!! It has to move freely.




8th slide shaft into new dust seal to just a few inches and if your doing it by yourself and want to protect from damaging new seal do what I did and suspend the shaft at the rag joint with what ever you have available, it just needs to hang around where it would be attached at rag joint to be able to slide easily into the joint under the dash.




9th reattach to rag joint with the 2 bolts removed earlier and tighten them down, make sure it's installed with your marks.



10th Slide the black plastic cover back over rag joint.



11th put bolt back in the joint under dash and tighten



12th Undo the bungee holding the steering wheel, Now move the steering wheel back and forth a few times and move the seal that the bolts have not tighten down yet from side to side in every direction so it will center itself then tighten the 2 bolts down and reinstall the cover for the dust seal. There all done!!!!

where would i find that firewall dust cover piece? mine is all cracked and falling completely apart. or do i even need one?

i'd also be interested in the plastic cover that goes over the shaft and rag joint.... my pickup doesn't have one of those. i can't find parts for either of the things i mentioned.

Wonder if this could be related to why my pickup's windows get condensation built up on the inside after it's been sitting in the rain for awhile.

 

interesting. could be, because mine fogs up like crazy. i have to keep the windows down in the cold and rain

 

oh wow i bet that gets old pretty quick haha. definitely glad mine still has working AC for blasting that glass dry and clear! i'm not sure if it's the couple open firewall holes or if maybe my truck's door seals are too torn up, but i've seen some water puddled in my passenger rubber floor mat that i'm not sure where it got in from. no sunroof so it's not that. wonder if any rain can get down to the firewall from behind the hood, then roll into any fire hole openings and get to that floor mat? hopefully it's not some hidden rust hole letting water in

 

I need to replace upper shifter bushing
on steering column. The only way I see
to do it is slide steering column up 1” to
get bushing in housing. I looked for the top steering column shaft joint. I removed the cover in the floor board but it will only raise up about 3”. I can’t
see A joint from inside the cab or under the hood except the one connecting to the power steering gear box. I removed the bolt that holds the joint to the steering gear but when I try to slide the
steering column up a little in the cab I can’t get it to budge. Should I pry on the joint at the gear box to get it to slide. I really need some help with this. If there is an upper joint connecting
intermediate shaft to top shaft I can not find it. It must be directly in middle of
firewall if it exists. Any suggestions
or help would be greatly appreciated.
