RPMs STILL fluxuating....

I really don't know what to do now. It was acting up last night when I drove it. I drove it to dinner tonight and on my way home I was going to the gas station....it started doing it. Then I thought it might just do it when I'm low on fuel? I fill up and it does it on the way back. I'm cruisin at 40-45 around 2700 RPMs. It shoots down to 2000 and then back up to 2700. It did it numerous times. WHAT COULD THIS BE?!?!?!?!

Fuel line? fuel filter? fuel pump? Something else I don't know about?!?!?!?!

Thanks

spark plugs? or the fuel filter. not sure really but at least on a dirtbike that seems like a spark plug issue... worth a shot

I just changed them not too long ago. I most likely need to change my fuel filter so I guess I will try that.

I put on that valve cover breather. Still been doing it, but I did notice a change in how it drives.

All these wires suck a ton of power from my alternator. How can you tell if it is tapped out? (When the car doesn't start?)

I'm guessing now after another drive that it is a fuel problem. It seems like its screaming it to me cause it will studder when getting up to speed sometimes...kinda like the fuel is cut off for a second. Also, twice tonight, after having my foot on the pedal with same pressure, I went to give it gas and nothing happened. I pushed the pedal to the floor with no response. I then let off and pushed it in and it went....so is it a fuel problem?

94 Doing the same thing

Dude, Let me know if you figure out your problem, because my 94 is doing the same thing. When I first start it up and engine is cold it drives fine. When engine is at normal operating temp the idle goes down and I go to give it gas and Nothing. I literally have to punch it to the floor and it will eventually kick in. Here's what I've tested or replace so far!!

Spark Plugs and Wires
Distributor Cap and Rotor
Fuel Filter
Mass Air Flow Sensor (tested and replaced with one from 91 Runnr)
Vacuum Leaks

The one thing that everyone on here is saying is the Throttle Position Sensor. I'm currently checking mine out.

funny thing is, my supra motor is doing the same thing. My fuel pump was making some awful noises out at uwharrie so thats what im going to look at first, if i ever get a day off to do it

mine got so bad on the drive home from uwharrie that i couldnt drive up the inclines going uphill at all. That was the point where i had to stop and call the tow truck.

Mine was teh same way. I use it to deliver newspapers and it got so bad that it took 3 or 4 minutes just to get up the simplest inclines. If I let off the gas and let it sit at idle for a sec or two it would eventually kick in. My dad figured out if you punch gas pedal to floor it would go, but I hate doing that because it revs engine up so much.

Definitely keep us up to date. I'll do teh same.

Have I or anyone mentioned the "Throttle Position Sensor" to you yet 4RocRunner92, as the symptoms cover what is commonly diagnosed as being the TPS.

I have a new TPS. No more than a few months old.

I'm definately leaning towards a fuel problem. I now consume a quarter tank of gas in 35 miles or less. I can barely climb inclines and now it is choking when I accelerate. (sp?) My tps is tight and am getting no codes from it. I have a list of strange codes but no one ever could help me with them. My MAF is a used one, but new to me since my stock one had oil all in it.

I can post my trouble codes if anyone would like to see them.

Could I have something in my fuel line?

Yes, and guys, thanks for trying to help me solve this problem. I will definately keep you guys posted as you will do for me. I'm glad I'm not on my own on this one.

new fuel filter should be <$20, its just a little canister that screws in series w/ the fuel hardline on the frame.

I woke up today and had to go downtown. I start the car and let it warm up. I drive downtown waiting for it to happen but it doesn't. It runs great on the way there. I had to walk a few blocks and back to the 4Runner. I get back to the car and i'm sweating. I start the car and turn the A/C on and let it cool inside for a few minutes. I start driving with it on and I know it's going to lag cause my engine is weak and it does. I then turn it off and roll the windows down for some air. Then it starts happening.....then I started smelling like it was running rich?

Is there some way that by me driving it and having the A/C on it is messing something up? I was hoping to see if it does it every time I drive it but thats ruled out.

Any thoughts?!?!

I have a post on another thread and someone suggested checking into the Catalytic Converter. I've been noticing a really bad smell so I'm going to look into that. How old is your Cat?
