Rotary Engine Swap?

I been wondering about swapping in a rotary engine from an RX-7? Same or better HP, lighter, and more room in the engine bay! I have been researching the rotary engines for a while! I will need engine, ecu, wiring, fuel system and some way to adapt the tranny to the engine. I will need custom motor mounts and lots of luck(I know where I might be able to get a rotary engine for cheap or even free).

Not really looking for power(ok i lied) My father-in law has a few junk Sami's I can get part from(they are in forestry business). They have 2 running Sami's and 2 junkers for parts! Dam this maybe viable option in the near future! I know where there is a 91 toyota std cab 4x4 with 3" lift and 35's for $500(he locked up the motor).

Yeah maybe some time in the near future! Right now I have to watch my pennies. We are remodeling our house(wish I didn't know how to do plumbing, electrical and carpentry). Then I wouldn't have to waste money on the house. I could build trail rigs instead!

You'll probably need more than 4:1. Rotaries aren't known for their torque, are they? You'd probably want to keep it fairly wound when crawling. Won't lug like the 22R-E's do.

I don't know a heck of a lot about rotoraies, or mazdas, but I know the the RX-7s, and possibly earlier had a lot of problems with the seals between the engine chambers. My friend used to have an rx-7, and this was constantly an issue. They might have resolved it on the RX-8s, but I think I would take Toyota reliablility over this any day. Like I said, I don;t know that much about them, but this is the first issue that would come to mind(except for the fabrications, and modding involved). Just my .02, and my experience is limited.

If you do run a 12A or 13B in a truck first thing to replace is the apex seals(what JHupp was talking about).

Also they won't have that much torque as state above. I have heard of people getting the 12A motors up to 275hp without a turbo or supercharger.

Don't expect to have an ungodly amount of torque...but if you are looking to do something "different" this swap would deff. fall into that category. I say go for it....

Speaking as both an rx-8 and toyota truck owner, I think it'd be an awesome project. Keep it naturally aspirated (turbo rotaries can be a real pain in the butt) and hog out the ports. It's true rotaries don't make a ton of torque, but proper gearing can make that pretty negligable.

Incidentally, have you seen the Repu? If I had a little more driveway space I'd love to have one.
