dude, that sucks bug time. I hope everything works out for ya. I would say go with the 84, based on everything you have said. SFA has a LOT of potential, and they look sweet. Either way, stay strong, have fun, and keep us posted.

my condolances also brother.... on the bright side, you're unhurt and I'm flinching as I say this but, it IS just a truck, it's very replaceable (don't hit me, I know it's 'not just a truck'...).

buddy of mine lost his 1000 hp Evo 9 trying to miss a dog going 55mph, hit a telephone pole and totaled it. had $80,000 into it, when he told me he wrecked his car and it was toast, I think I had a bigger reaction than he did! He shrugged his shoulders and said, 'it's just a car, I can get another one' .

doesn't make the sick feeling go away overnight but stay positive and put your effort into your new '84 rig.

yes i would def get the 84. im sorry about your loss i feel terrible for you. but atleast no one was hurt. if it were me, i would keep the front fenders and the hood and hang them up in your garage or living room or bedroom( may take some sweet talkin to the misses for that, bu tyou get the idea) to keep as a memory of her. or heck, build a big plexi glass box and pu tthe yota in it and set it in your front yard. but all jokin aside, seriously, keep the fenders and hood or somethin off it. that was one sweetness of a yota.

crap dude that sucks sorry to hear about it. i think i would go with the 84 since its a better base to start with being sfa, i would rather be sfa carbed than ifs and fuel injected lol. oyah i have a nicely sized extinguisher right between my seats just in case of this exact thing happens!

when i can get pics of the 84 i'll post em up. Very little rust on it and it's like a time capsule. Nothing done just bone stock. Thursday i gotta get the 91 all buttoned up so it can be inspected and legal by next week. Lucky i picked that one up a while ago for a project as it'll be my daily driver quad hauler gas sipper. Basically the daily beater.

Ill be blunt. The truck is a goner. Dont waste you time or energy doing anything but stripping off the good parts and disposing of the body. Let her go. The frame itself has been weakened from the heat.

Ill help with the new one.

highlux what do you have going on thursday? I gotta do the timing chain/head gasket that day might give you a shout for help if needed. The mightymouse is selling sometime this week so yeah i've accepted it's passing and it'll be parted out after selling it. The 84 on the other hand is sweeeeet. The guy that's selling it to me is putting in a motor this month and after some mods should be good to go.

Man oh man I am so sorry to see and hear this, I know you have probably herd this a few times but really the most important thing is that you and others are okay. Don't beat yourself up thinking about what if I did this or did that, you did everything perfect and how I know this is that you are okay and so are others. I have never had a vehicle for 11 years and I could only imagine how attached you can get.

However I already see a smile on your face from your post when you talk about the 84 that will take her place. What parts you can salvage swap on over to the new rig and this will help with the fact that a little bit of the ole mouse is always with you. The memories and times you had in the truck will always be with ya.

If you need any help at all give me a ring 417-522-3239 I'm just down I-70 and would be in my 4runner in a second to come help you out.

I have seen and dealt with a couple of car fires and when gasoline is the source there is very little you can do. This worst part is when a under the hood fire starts and the hood gets vented the fire is fed with oxygen and it can grow to out of control in seconds. So don't worry man you did perfect.

Ya a fire like mouse had would just laugh at that, the only way is an actual fire suppression system like posted below, and just the name of the system should (suppression) help understand how hard gasoline fueled fires can be. Those systems are designed to give the driver more time to get out of the vehicle.

On a side note those of you using OBA systems that use a 10lb or even 20lb co2 tank can use your OBA tank as a extinguisher if you need to (if you have time to unmount it and remove the regulator) If I ever get a co2 OBA system I will mount it using a quick release and only mount the reg when in use.

Mouse keep your head up brother and for real let me know if you need anything.

Chris

Highlux, Chris, thanks, Really it's cool and i know i'm super blessed to be ok and others around ok as well. Chris you nailed it man i'm already grinning ear to ear every time i think about the 84. Every thing on the 2wd 9i pickup is good except the motor work. Fender, brakes, swapped over some stuff from the ole mouse and after the hg and timing chain i should be good to go. I plan to be back in a yota by next week. On another note o sold the mightymouse today and wiped a tear from my eye as it was loaded on the trailer. A very generous friend of mine gave me more than it was worth and i walked away from it feeling ok to know the parts will get to another truck to keep another persons "baby" alive for some more miles.

hey...back to the original fire.

what was the cause? you did say you had a gas leak in the original post???? where from?? what's the post-mortem on this? I am asking all this because , as you know, i did the top and front end rebuild on mine and am currently doing my son's.

congrats on the quick replacement find too.

no prob 92. When looking at the rear passenger firewall you could see where the fire originated as it was the hottest part and burned white hot and left a mark on the fire wall. This is where the interior started to catch as well since it got so hot. This will be all speculation on my part but here goes. One of the lines towards the rear of the fuel rail suddenly gave way and started spewing gas. Could it have been a loose fitting/, bad banjo bolt,/ cracked line/,?? I couldn't tell ya. What's funny is the truck wasn't stumbling or running funny to warrant a look under the hood either. The signs and symptoms until it happened as i recall was in a two minute time frame to ball park it. I look under the hood of my truck usually a couple times a week to check oil and look things over and to be honest i had no idea the thing was going to fail. My best guess is the fuel line at the rear of the fuel rail failed in some sort of way spewing fuel all over that side of the block and as it did the block was hot enough to catch the gas on fire. Or it spewed on the electrical wires and sparked and went from there. Is there preventative maintenance you could do? Yeah, check your fuel lines periodically lord knows i will. Make sure they are firm and strong with no signs of fatigue or cracking. Oh yeah no matter what the situation you smell fuel shut the darn truck off and pullover, wait for it to cool down and check it out. I don't care if you're blocking the pope shut it down he'll get over it. Hindsight is waaay to crystal clear! Kinda sucks to think of what i shoulda coulda woulda done if given the chance.

similar but different story...and obviously ended differently since i am still driving mine.

about 6 or so years ago, took my truck to a drive-through car-wash (Edwardsville XXXTREME) and chose the "deluxe" where it shoots jets of water from the floor to clean away all the road salt etc from our Pennsylvania winters(except i remember it being warm out). anyway, on the way home i remember getting a whiff of gas.

for a few days i smelled gas.....blamed it on everything from driving with the windows down to maybe a bad gas cap letting some vapors free on a hot day.

pulled into work (i work at an ER) one morning to be greeted by a stream of gas running past me when i opened my door......stupidly i got back in and backed my truck to a secluded parking space so as to not catch the other cars on fire.

gas continued to stream......slowly now, until i was able to get it towed.

end-of-story........something on top of the tank......got knocked loose with one of those upward-pointed jets of water at the car-wash. the mechanic explained that on top of the tank gets corroded but because there is no movement, this rarely happens......point a high pressure jet of water at it and snap it goes.

i was lucky.

and i've never done that kind of car wash in any of our vehicles since then.

An old girlfreind of mine needed a car..cheap car...we got her a 81 corolla wagon...she picked it up and it caught on fire on the way home...it burned up. It was her birthday.

One year to the date...she was driving an 82 corola wagon..her birthday..we were on out way out...stopped for gas...it caught on fire...couple shots with a fire extinguiser...fired it up and went out and partied.
