Result after the 5 Speed Swap and MLS HG Repair

Showing off my 5 speed progress...

...After the long wait of the swap to be done and some other work, I finally got it all done last week. Was test driving it around for a bit to see if any problem will occur, but nontheless its seem to run perfect. The swap was worth the challenge, I don't have the lagging that I use to have with the automatic tranny, 10 or 9 mpg, manuel shift, smell burnt after rev it at 4k rpm, and slowness. Fastest I can go w/ it is at 50 miles per hour, rev it hard than its 65 miles per hour, only if I'm lucky, and then it will fast giong back to 50 miles per hour. Now with the 5 speed manuel I can reach the 100mph range. Also giong uphill, I can accelerate faster and manually shift within the range it suppose to be at, unlike the automatic...

Picture & Video,

Have it cover w/ some high temp. bandage to cover the heat range within the area.. it'll smell for awhile but then it should be fine after it.

I did some resurface myself, but didn't come close to the recommendation on using the MLS HG. O'well I have nothing to loose so this all I got...

Just a picture of the front engine.

Looks great! Say, do you have a write up of your swap with pics? I found one, but it was a 2WD swap. I wanna do the same in my truck and i am having trouble tracking down the info.

Wow - looks brand new!

I think I would have done headers while I had the engine out though...

Note to anyone else - the MLS HG should be used with R50 or finer block/head surface only.. Not all machine shops surface them that well.

i seriously doubt a police officer would take the time to track him down and write him a ticket for something he found online.

about the RPM....
If his rig is stock, then he's geared a little low. When mine was stock, it had 5spd with 4.56 31" while the auto had 4.88 with 31". ....
He can put on 33's without regearing.

Other member want me to make a list on what they needed for the swap so here is what you will need for the swap, I will try to list all the parts as I can.

What you will need,

1) I got the 5 speed from a 1989 V6 4x4 5 speed, so any V6 5 speed from '88-95 should bolt in on any V6 engine.

2) If your truck is a 4runner model then you want to pull the driveshaft from another 4runner to your current year model. I am currently running my driveshaft which I have to pull it longer about 3 or 4 inches, the guy told me if there is no teeth showing then you should be fine so i just giong with him on that, but at this time no vibration what so ever...

3) I do not need to change my cross-member it was an bolt in. You also want to get the 5 speed tranny mount, cost about $90.

4) Whole new clutch kit, Flywheel, flywheel bolts $21.00 for 10, clutch plate bolts ( got them from marlin crawler ).

5) Shifter, t-case shifter, master clutch, slave cylinder, hard and soft line, clutch assembly w/ the bracket. Need to make one hole for the master clutch about 31mm hole then 2 holes for the studs, mark the hole first on your automatic bracket before you swap them to the clutch bracket. Harbor fieght carry them, bi-metal mandrel tool to make those hole.

6) Need to make a hole on the shifter so you can fit the shifter into it, I finish these step first before installing the tranny into the engine. Safety glass and a dust mask is a must while cutting them hole.

7) Those bolts that bolt your tranny to the engine, I reuse them didn't have any problem on any length on them.

8) After you are done with the work and want to get it started you need to crawl under your truck and find a plug that has about 8 to 10 wire that goes to your wire harness to the tranny harness, you should find it at the end plug and then cut the 2 black wire, they are bigger then all wire on that plug and attach them togheter then it should start up the truck, no need to press the clutch pedal to get it started.

9) Lastly you may check if you need a new VSS ( vehicle speed sensor ) I have to change mine, it was an mechanical vss so I got one that I can plug my plug to it from tap recycle. marlin Crawler sale an adaptor for the mechanical one, check them out.

This is the best I can describe at this time.
If anyone that want to chim on other parts that I may be missing pls fill free to list them in so they don't miss out...

The music was sung by a hmong lady, nice song if you can understand it, here is a video from youtube, you can listen it better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i2JRJp6bU0

I believe my gear ratio is 4.88, alloy rims w/ the auto tranny.

I max out at 100 mph cause my gas pedal hit the floor, it seem that it can still go a bit more, but the gas pedal hit the floor!

people around here drive fast, around the 80's to the 90's, I am testing it when the traffic is not that congested, pretty look like I am driving reckless but I am safe driver .

Thanks... Hope it help for the other that want the swap, PM me or here if you still need more question.

Wouldn't consider it'll reach 100... my two neighbor has the same truck as mine, the other neighbor actually have 2 2nd gen. 4runner, one is a 2wd and another one is a 4x4, and all of them is slow... both are auto tranny too. If I was there seeing them drive off you can here them rev so hard to get to that speed, now with my 5 speed I don't have to bother that no more... and yet from what I have heard the engine spin twice to actually spin the auto tranny to get the truck giong... Also I have more room underneath then my auto use to be there and no code to run it like the auto does, from what i have heard auto tranny has like 10 codes or more.

I miss my 5 speed but my 94 with the A340H and it's way too tall OD actually does one thing well, go 90MPH+ with the engine in the happy zone. It'll do 100.

People in other parts of the country often don't realize just how fast we drive in Ca. 80+ is standard. People get pulled over and get big tickets, but they keep on driving fast. It's just the way it is.
