Replacing outer CV boot while doing front brake overhaul?

Aloha guys!

I’m wondering if I can easily get to the front CV axle boot while I’m doing a front brake overhaul on my 94 4x4 t4r?

I am already pulling the whole front hub assembly replacing wheel seal, regreasing bearings and putting new rotors, calipers, pads, and soft lines.

It looks like from few pics I can find on forums, tutorials, and fsm it should be just a few more bolts to get to the outer end of the axle and then I can put on a fresh boot. Mine are pretty shot. I replaced with split boots but they don’t seal very well.

I think you'll have to completely remove the half'shaft from the truck to change the boot.

I can't remember for certain, but I think the inner boot and the inner spider have to be removed in order to replace the outer boot. Better plan on replacing both the inner and outer boots

You might consider a new or rebuilt half'shaft. That'll cut your time and mess substantially.

millball has it right (as usual). The outer boot comes off the inner end, so you have to remove (and replace) the inner boot as well.

While you can get kits to replace either boot, it's an awful, messy, job. More importantly, the reman half-shafts can be had for less than the price of an inner and outer boot kit! Go figure.

The next time I have to do this job, I'm getting the remans and calling it done.

i kept the original half-shafts from '87 #2. i did use reman'ed replacements. i plan to rebuild the originals, if only to learn how to do it, rather than any cost savings economy. i already have the 4 new boots, and have cleaned one of the half-shafts. still haven't gotten around to putting it back together, but when any of the 4 in my 2 '87s starts to go bad, i'll be ready.

Check your tool for tightening the band around the boot. There are two common types of band, and whichever tool you have, the bands in the kit will be the other kind.

Thanks boys! I kinda realized this when I was rethinking over it and you guys just confirmed. I'm going to wait and just put new or reman'd ones in and do the front shocks and maybe whatever else she needs in that area at the same time because it looks like (from videos) you can just disconnect some linkage and take out front shock and take it out that way instead of tearing down the whole hub.

Brake job went great! except for one broken hub bolt (got a little happy with the miluakee impact driver hahaha) was able to pull one of the two right side bolts that hold on the bumper and cut off the large washer with the Dremel (a recent purchase that I've literally used almost every single day and has saved me on several jobs with the truck) and just had to grind the end off because it was a touch longer than the rest. Thankfully had a handy Ryobi extractor kit from when I was rebuilding an old Wr250F basket case and was able to pull the broken hub bolt out.

Really nice to get all the rusted crud out from under there and now she stops nice and smooth and no pulling to the right! Couldn't believe how bad the rotors were, outside was ok but the inside was 50 clean 50 streaks of rust. Pads were hanging over the lip of the rotor and the calipers were looking pretty rough too. Did new soft brake lines while in there and now she's sitting pretty
