Replace my own alternator?

Is it difficult to replace my own alternator? I have very limited experience on engine work.

I have a 94 Toyota PU 22re 5speed.

I tried searching for anything related to replacing the alternator and didnt find anything that was quite in terms that I could understand or thought was useful. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

its definately doable. its just a matter of getting under there to get it unbolted.

take a look, and see if you can figure out how to get at all the bolts.

Super simple job... One bolt in the top, one in the bottom. One plug in the back and one nut on the battery wire.

Most find it easiest to remove the lower radiator hose to get it out from the bottom. And yes, you have to drain the rad to do that.

Just be sure to unhook the positive battery cable before you start and you shouldn't have any problems...

Not a difficult job, but i did have to drain the rad to get it out. People kept telling me it was possible to do without removing lower rad hose, but i don't know how i barley fit with the hose out... And i had to do it in the snow by the side of the road

Plus to make matters worse the alternator that i got was rebuilt and the threads in the alternator that are for the bolt you use to tighten the alternator belt back up were not there at all, just a smooth hole, so after filling the rad back up and getting everything hooked up i had to remove everything and start all over again

But it was not difficult just took longer than our other cars.

The only bad part is having to undo the lower radiator hose like everyone above says.

I have done it on 2 different trucks without removing the lower radiator hose. It takes some doing but I always take it out from above.

Good luck!

No need to remove the hose as long as you can muscle it out. Really simple job and I learned the hard way to remove the batt. cable...

I once did mine in a motel parking lot with the the skid plate and radiator hose still on. Not hard at all.

How does that help this guy that wants to change his alternator?

Are you suggesting he cut out his steering to make the job easier?

I find is easier to just take the fan off (4 bolts) and slide the Alternator through into the fan shroud and out the other side by the throttle body. No coolent to deal with.
