Recent head gasket change; now transmission issue

Hoping to get some help troubleshooting a transmission issue...

We recently completed a head gasket change on a 1993 4runner. The truck started fine and idles fine after the head gasket work, but now seems to be stuck in a high gear when in drive. When placed in low gear and in reverse it works as expected. There are no check engine or O/D lights flashing. The ATF level looks good.

If the check engine or O/D lights are not flashing does that indicate that the speed sensors, wiring and solenoids are working?

Latest development. Drove around shifting the transmission manually and it seemed to shift well. Also, the O/D light began flashing so I'll check the codes and see what that shows.

The transmission problem ended up being a bad solenoid in the tranmission. The throttle cable was also mis-adjusted; could that have lead to the issue with the solenoid? In any case, the transmission is working well now that it has new solenoids.

Latest issue is lack of power and jumpy timing. Just about have to floor it to get up steep inclines. The timing is not consistent; it jumps around from 15 to 20. The truck idles well at 800 rpm and does not misfire that we can tell.

Regarding the lack of power - I was initially thinking that could be that the timing could be off, but it seems that 15 to 20 should result in greater power not less.

Could both these issues be an issue with the timing belt; perhaps off a tooth? I thought that the belt / valve timing being off would result in poor idle, which we've not found.

No current engine or O/D codes.

We did find a significant exhaust leak at the crossover, but that has been fixed and did not improve power or timing.

Appreciate your thoughts.
