Rebuld or engine swap

Rebuld or engine swap
New here, looking for a little advise. Got a '93 yota p/u with a 22RE in it that has a knock in it. Been knocking for awhile, but is getting worse. Sounds deep like a riskpin or something of that nature. Here is the question. Would you rebuild what I got or go ahead and do an engine swap? If swap, what is the most recommended and easiest swap?

I would look for a low mileage 22re first at a decent price. That would be the easiest. Then id look into rebuilding. If you want to swap, look into 3.4 v6. Has been done many times and lots of info on here, just search.

What is the end goal of the vehicle in question.
Being a pick up if you pull things or throw a 1000 pound payload in the back you might want to go with a 3.4swap.
If the basic goal is to just get from point A to B the22REC is a very dependable engine with some TLC will last a long time.
Just what is your skill level ?? can you repin wiring connectors??
Very comfortable reading Toyota Electrical Wiring Diagrams ??
Weld and fabricate ??
Is this going to be a long term project something that needs to be up and running in a few days??
These things impact just what will work best for you . Lots of info on here and other forums read all you can to make a better informed choice.

If you're happy with your current engine performance, the 2rz and 3rz engines should be easier swaps than the 3.4. They'll probably take more time than machining, performance heads, performance cams, new exhaust, etc, on a new 22 RE. However, pricewise, you're only looking at another $1k or so on top of what would be $2500 or $3000 22 RE complete rebuild (if you paid someone else to do it all), and save yourself all the headaches. I like toyonlyswaps.com work (I'm starting to feel like I'm pimping these guys... but I have no affiliation) and you can follow their work on facebook. Looks like top quality, though I don't know how much they're rebuilding engines prior to installing them on folks rigs.
