Looking to buy a reman 22re for a 94 4x4 truck. Any reputable shops ? Was going to go with 22re performance but they're at a 5 month build wait. Heard bad things about OER, and on the fence with toyotatruckengine.com.

I used www.sunwestautomotiveengines.com/ I'm happy with engine. I did blow head gasket when weather got cold but that was my own fault for not cleaning out heater core when I installed engine. They worked with me on shipping to find a business to ship to and been there to answer questions.

 

You can do it yourself like I am, or find a local guy. I know a fellow in Peekskill, who ships to NZ in the pacific. So for you its a piece of cake. Advanced motion in Peekskill NY is name I remember, PM me if interested.

 

what kind of power are you trying to make with the 22

 

Stock, or a little more power than stock. Want to run 31s with a 3 inch lift.

 

Just cam the 22 and gear it with like 456 unless u ever wanna go bigger tires go 488s. The stock motor was made to run 29 inch tires so if u go to 31 10.5 not that big of a difference. I got a bottom end rebuild kit with block I'm thinking about selling so I can do a 5vz swap

 

Gearing of difs will make biggest gains for drivability with tire size. Are you automatic? Small power gains with these engines comes with a price tag. I'm happy with my little built 22RE but I'm under no delusions it's still a torque motor not hp motor.

 

22RE Performance, Putney's worth the wait.

 

Truck is manual trans. I'm not even sure what happened to the motor that's in it now. I'm an automotive tech and bought this truck from a co - worker who said the oil pump failed. Motor won't turn over, it was about 2qts low as well. I was thinking about a cam but are they worth it for these motors?

 

I have a built 22RE and enjoy it. Plus it's a reliable engine. I think it's worth it. But kinda need to put first steps first. What broken now and is it rebuildable. Are you planning to do work yourself? What's your resources (tools, money, machining)? What's your timeline?

Time to do lot's of research. Decide on what you want for engine. Lot's of ppl modify these engines, me included. But I haven't seen one person that post up dyno numbers for what there mods have produced. Most, including myself, have "the seat of the pants dyno." I am included and will not go pay dyno fees to measure upgrades. So if a person goes and drops money and time on an upgrade of course the "seat of the pants dyno" reports big gains.

I had Putney's (22repreformance) build me a engine about 5 years ago now. Still runs great and not a single leak...which is the best part. Best money I've ever spent.

I have a new twin turbo F150, but I still enjoy the old Toyota more. Like today, it's -20 out and I would rather take the Toyota. I just know it will work.

 

I looked around here in Oregon and did not go with OER, but didn't really research them much. They have a lifetime warranty on their engines. That's pretty amazing. I went with a single guy in Springfield OR who is sort of associated with Toyota Engine Rebuilders, who is right next door. I don't understand the connection between these guys, but anyway so far I really like the guy rebuilding mine for me. He seems to have a lot of experience in performance mods to not only these engines but lost of others. I'll post about the final product.

 

The only bad thing about the warranty is you have to pay shipping both ways..... I was offered a clean older (1988) S10 street truck with a built 406 small block, turbo 350 trans w/ stall converter for my toyota the way it sits.

 

The other thing about a warranty is that you may actually have to argue with the seller in defense of the problem and you have to remove the engine and do all that on your own. I had a reputable machine shop rebuild my 7.3 diesel for $4k and 1 year warranty and within about $2000 miles and less than a year, the thing had a major leak from cylinder to coolant jacket. They wouldn't talk to me and then a few months later they went out of business. No wonder I don't trust the so-called professionals.

 

You didn't say where you live. There's a place in Cary, NC that has been advertising on Craigslist in NC. It's close enough to me that I could go pick up an engine if I had to. They have a performance 22RE and have 3.0's. I'm interested if anybody has any info on them. Outlet Engines? $1075?

I'm in Oregon. OER has the stock 22re rebuilt for $1095 on ebay. Pretty close to Outlet. I know nothing about these engines, though.

 

Toyota still sells a short block for $1900.

It's cheap enough I thought I would order one to just keep as a future mod...

 

I live in Memphis, but am actually moving back to Raleigh/Durham this spring...that's why I don't want to wait the 5 months for an engine from 22re performance. I need to get this truck running before I move. I didn't even think to check with Toyota! I didn't think they would have something that old available.

 

Check DOA racing, lake norman area.

 

Is DOA reputable enough to put something like this on the line?
