Rebuild, Replace, Or Motor Swap??
My 3.0 is getting ready to die on me, and being 18 with not a ton of money, Im trying to find the best option for the money I do have
Should I get it rebuilt? Or is it not worth it? And about how much should/will that cost?
My dads telling me to get a longblock and just replace it, but the cheapest long block I found for the 3.0 was around 1500 by itself.
and lastly, how much would it cost me to do a 4.3 vortec swap? I really like the idea, but my max budget for everything is going to be 1500-2000 dollars.
Oh yeah and for reference its a 1990 4runner with 98k on it, but has bad blow by in at least 2 cylinders. I could get heads and a cam for 280 with core, but would that just be a waste of money?

hi cracked91, well I was just in your situation a few weeks ago. However, I bought my 95 4runner with a blown head gasket for $1000 as a project......I would try to go to this website....www.uneedapart.com or www.getausedpart.com a lot of junkyard are going to call you with prices of motors. the cheapest I found was $800 with shipping to california but almost 180 miles to pick it up......then I come across yotatech read a few thread and decided to do it myself....I think it is going to cost me between $500 to $700 to get it running. the cost of the headgasket kit and machine shop bill.......I have two other cars to drive, I dont know if you have another vehicle for now because it is going to take you a while to get it back in the road. to do a swap is more expensite and more complicated.....do you have a blown head gasket or what?

No the motor itself runs now, 2 of the cylinders have major blow by that keeps the spark plugs fouled and misfiring all the time. So I am running on 2/3 ish power, and with the 3.0, that means slug.
But I think If I don't rebuild it, I am going to see what is going to run me to put the 4.3 vortec in there.

Funny mine is a 2 door too.
But I just wonder if rebuilding the 3.0 is even worth it, and can anyone who has done a 4.3 swap give me an estimate of about how much the spent?

man up! and pull that engine and rebuild it with your old man...
the only objection i have is if you can get a used engine. for less then a rebuild then do it. if not save your lunch money, save up and do it right.

AMEN!!!!! To that.....I used to have car payment till I got I an accident. Car was total lost. Then I bought me a used car with a blown engine for $500. Put new engine and no problem what so ever, car runs great....cheaper insurance too.
