rear pinion seal

hey guys ,

well my bro is letting me use for now his locked rear 3rd. only thing is it leaks like a bitch. I have the seal kit for the pinion, but am wondering if the bearing might be shot too? how can I tell and where can I get the pinion bearing? should I just do the seal and see if it holds up and forget about the bearing? I dont want this thing to lock up on the highway in the rain .

Grab the companion flange and try to move it up/down and side/side. If it moves at all in any direction besides rotation, the pinion nut is loose and/or the outer pinion bearing is shot. Try retightening and checking with a pull-scale to see if you can get the pre-load within specs. I'll look that up for ya in a sec, hold on.

If you need to buy just the bearing, RockAuto.com has them.

O.k., so it's 11.3 in-lbf. for a 2 pinion(4cyl). 6.9 in-lbf for the 4 pinion(Turbo/V6).

The rest is here:http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...35differen.pdf
