rear main seal question (3.0 v6)
I'm replacing the rear main seal on my '90 pickup (2wd v6). The new replacement seal is a reddish rubber material, but it looks like the old seal is some kind of fiber or felt type material.
What's the seal supposed to be made of? Were they changed after 1990? Do I have the wrong replacement part? How do I remove this 'fiber' seal from the block? I have a feeling I'm being dumb here. Thanks.

The red seal is fine. Just make sure you put a light coat of oil on it before you install it.
Supposed to be made of? Well, whatever works......whether it's fiber or rubber. It depends on whoever is making the gasket. As far as them being changed, the market and materials used does change. One would always hope for the better. As long as it's the right size, the rubber seal is good to go.
Spray some brake cleaner on the old seal and let it soften. Then, just pry it out with a flat head screwdriver.
