I'd go LSD also..
If you want a true part time locker, I'd convert a Tacoma E-locker.
Mechanical lockers... well, not useful enough in a 2wd to justify the clicking, the pulling, and the tire wear.

 

Dunno... I never had a 2wd.

I do know that you can put any axle in any truck you want to. Worst case is you have to weld on new spring perches.

Get out your tape measure and go to the junkyard and see where everything is.

As for pricing, start watching the classified ads here and at a few other big forums, watch your local stuff, craigslist, and where ever else you can. You'll find prices vary between $100-600 on them as they become available.

 

Why don't we back up a bit before making all sorts of recommendations.

What are you looking to do with the truck? Locker + "mainly on-road driving" does not compute. Hence the LSD suggestions.

So just what is it you're wanting to accomplish?

Forgot about the 5 lug on the 2wd.

Some supras have the LSD, It may be a 7.5, might just drop in there. not sure though

 

unless you have a 1ton truck (they arnt too common) then yes, it applies. And yeah, the 7.5 supra lsd will fit, just gotta make sure
that supra has a 7.5 diff. Google the supra forums, they got a good following.

now, as to the locker mainly on-road driving not computing, i was trying to say, this is my dd, and i dont get many chances to go out and wheel. however, on those few happy occassions id like to be able to wheel well. also, this is to help get rid of my "mad insane intense power wheel" ive got about 60% tread on my left tire, and my right tire is bald. they were replaced at about the same time. neither one over 15 grand miles ago. sooo... i figure if its locked up a little better i wont get a sick spin that eats my tires ever time i pop out of first in my never ending attempt to be a corvette.

so detroit tru trac? the one that costs $369.79(give or take 30cents)?

 

I had a lock-rite in my 95 tacoma x-tra cab, 5 speed, 2.4 cyl, 2 wheel drive. It was a real "bronco ride" when corning at slow to moderate speeds. The tru trac has better road manners than a lock-rite, but you will have corner "clicks". Might want to turn up the CD player when cornering.

 

There are no non-selectable (manual lockers) that run "open".
Contrary to what some may tell you here on this forum, a LSD is not a locker.
The only real selectable (manual) locker that I would choose is the ARB.
It's about as close to bullet proof as you can get.
It doesn't have any crap hanging in the way on the outside of the diff (only a small airline that can enter the top of the diff.).
They've been around for a long time.
They're well proven on the toughest trails everywhere.

tru trac sounds great. and im not worried about the clicks. at all. if i can drown out interstate wind with the windows down with my music, im sure i can overpower some clicks. thanks bunches on that one.

 

You are aware, aren't you, that the Tru Trac is not a locker, it's a LSD.
If you want a LSD that's one thing, but don't mistake a LSD for a locker and the off road performance of a locker.

ok. so heres what i want. maintained on-road drivability with my "power wheel" eliminated, and better mudding capability. for a '94 2wd pu.

 

ARB air locker..

Open diff. when not engaged = perfect on road manners.
Truely locked when engaged.
Years and years of reliable and proven ruggedness behind them.
Proven on the toughest trails in the world.

and known to swallow wallets whole... thats a difference of 400 bucks from the tru trac to the arb. im just a poor kid. lol. save me from total chaos. speaking of total chaos...

 

No one has ever said that wheeling was cheap..

Do it right and it cost $$.
Do it wrongly and (if the person really wheels it) it cost $$.

lol. yes. yes i do. i want to wheel without the wheels. mhm. well. i guess im gonna just do the lift now and maybe the tires, and during the summer when im actually making money money i'll work on getting a locker and such. thanks for the input though. if anything new comes out, or someone finds an arb locker in a box on the side of the road and wants to sell it for cheap(or give it away, whatever floats ur boat/truck) pm me.
