rear diff identification

Just bought a junker because it had a suspension lift I plan on putting on my ride. Frame and suspension and diffs. No cab or hood so no way of getting the axle code off the door or hood.

Is there any way of knowing the ratio without going inside of it. N2 is stamped on the rear diff.case.could this tell me anything?

is the axle still in it?
rotate the axle and count how many turns the pinion moves. Never assume it has stock gears especially if it already had a suspension lift.

My runner is an 1985 but the rear axle is a later model assembly . How do I know what it is and what it may have come off of so I can order the correct locker and gears.
