Rear Axle Seal/Bearing Job

I am finishing up replacing the rear wheel bearing and seals on my 87 Pickup. I picked up a new O Ring to install too - the one that goes around the end of the axle housing. I am wondering if I should also put some RTV around the rim or should that be avoided? Is the O-Ring sufficient? I didn't have any leaks previously, but can't tell if the factory added any gasket maker during assembly? Thanks a lot for any advice!

If you see any rust/pitting where the O-ring contacts the axle housing or the bearing pocket a skiff of RTV isn't a bad idea. It's probably not a bad idea either way. If you have clean surfaces then a good amount of grease would be a good alternative.
