Rear axle noise

I have a micro mini MH on a 90 Toyota one ton. It has only 60,000 miles on it. There is a noise that sounds like a tire flat spot coming from the rear. The tires are new so that rules out tire problems. It happens when I give it gas. When I back off it disappears. It is speed dependent and is loudest between 25-40 mph. I jacked up the rear and spun each wheel and could not hear any bearing noise. I checked the drive shaft and the universals seem tight with no noise. My local mechanic (who is pretty sharp) thinks it is in the differential. The Toyota dealers aren't sure what time of day it is. I don't mind paying to get it fixed as long as someone knows what their doing.

This is my third Toyota mounted MH in 16 years and never had a problem like this. The drive trains are pretty bullet proof.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Sounds a LOT like the diff. Maybe only needs adjustment, but if you don't plan on doing it yourself, you need to find a trusty local mechanic. Where are you located? Maybe someone can refer you to a good one...

If I had a noise like that.....I would put a jack under both tires and wiggle the driveshaft right next to the pinion shaft....if the pinion had visible movement then that's the problem. I would also man-handle the wheels and shake them around listening/looking for the loose thud of a nearly destroyed wheel bearing.

Also, remove the fill plug on the rear end and verify that there is still oil in there.....does it have a good color to it and does it seem to have excessive metal flakes suspended in it?
