really bad knock

really bad knock
well thats about it she has a bad knock at over 2.5k and i think its the chain cause it is very very loose about an inch and a half of play shes a 22re 5 speed efi need help and its not ping even though its an inch passed the timing dohicky thingamabob any ideas on what this knock is?

Motor Knock
Replace the chain by all means , a chain or belt slapping would cause to me a different noise than a bearing knock , hope you don't have both , take care of the chain and go from there , if you still have the knock then I would have to say go from there , hope its not a main , if it was you should probably hear it on a cold start up also . If its still there get a stethoscope and check for the knock and where it is .

Replace the chain by all means , I guess that means if you have a cam belt that it is probably in the same shape , a chain or belt slapping would cause to me a different noise that a bearing knock , hope you don't have both , take care of the chain and or the cam belt (if you havn't replaced recently) and go from there , if you still have the knock then I would have to say go from there , hope its not a main , if it was you should probably hear it on a cold start up also . If its still there get a stethoscope and check for the knock and where it is .

if your getting a knock its not from the chain that makes a slapping/grinding sound) or a growl. Use a stethoscope and find out where the knock is coming from before you go and do the chain... no sence waisting time if you decide to junk the engine

How much slack in the timing chain is acceptable? I had the cover off to do the valves the other day and looked around, pushed on the chain with a screwdriver and everything looks fine to me. Then I realized I have no idea how much chain deflection is ok.--and I have that strange diesel rattle sound at start up

Thats a lot of work. Is there any way to check the chain wear with just the valve cover off? Obviously, it won't be as accurate but...Like I mentioned above, what is the allowable amount of deflection? If there is no easy way, and if 80,000 seems like a good time to do it, I may just schedule the weekend and make it happen.

, they have a test in the FSM for it but you have to remove chain and measure links to determine stretch of chain , its like 17 links you measure and then spec's for measurement.
