*Quiet* performance muffler?
I just had a new motor built and installed for my '87 4Runner, and a new cat-back (2.5").
The new muffler is OK, but still makes conversation in the truck a bit harder than I want. I personally don't care if everyone on the street knows I'm coming, and prefer they don't when they have red and blue lights mounted.
Any suggestions for a quiet muffler which doesn't kill performance?

i have one that i took off my truck before i put the flowmastr in. its called a raven. its still quiet but not restrictive like the stocker. you can have it if you want. just pay me for the shipping. i think its a 2.25 or 2.5 in inlet/outlet.

I put a Dynomax "performance" (suposedly) muffler on my truck before my Pacesetter cat-back kit, and it sounded almost stock but I can't really speak to how much more "umpf" it gave, since technically the old muffler flowed just as much air through all the holes rusted in it

...Also then, are we saying that 2.5 inch pipe is as big as we can go on a 1st gen 4rnr, without having to reroute/ reshape/ screw other things up?
I am thinking of a Borla exhaust with 3 inch pipe...

Have a resonater welded in after the muffler. They are pretty much a glasspack muffler (straight through), just smaller. So in essence you would have two mufflers. This is what I did, the muffler that was on my truck when I got it was too loud for my taste, and having a resonater installed in the tailpipe section was cheaper than paying for a new muffler.

I got a flowmaster, although I'm not exactly sure what kind it is. It's really pretty mellow at idle when it's warmed up, but it sounds good, esp with high flow cat, and headers. I get compliments on the sound of it all the time..... although not so much lately with the squealing belt under the hood. lol
It's a 2.5 system that I had installed for around $125-$150. I got a used muffler to save a little money, but it sounds good, so that's all I really care about. I'm not sure how much power I've gained, though. I'm sure probably a little.

I have a flowmaster 40. It's a nice muffler, but I would prefer less noise inside. I'm looking at the flowmaster 50 SUV or the Dynomax Super Turbo which are supposed to flow well with less noise.

Mine's pretty quiet inside also. It's real mellow inside at idle, and not obnoxious inside revving either. Although it's pretty loud outside when I rev it, it's not bad outside at idle.
