questions about my door jam code

i was reading a thread on gearing and found the chart for deciphiring the door jamb code. well my numbers are that would refer to the gearing are G144. from the chart on the page that would mean that my 4runner has 14 = 4.875 31", AT 22RE. so does this mean my truck has 4.875 gears? and it says AT 22RE and my 4runner definetly has a 3.0 sitting under it. soo what am i doing wrong or was my motor replaced or something?

ooo and my 4runner is a 95 but my brothers 94 sitting right beside mine in the driveway, the door jamb says G254

That's an error on the chart. The last "4" means you have a V6 carrier. Your truck came with the 3.0, 31's stock, and an auto tranny, so you have 4.88's. You can go to 33's without too much problem with gearing, but you'll have a hard time in overdrive on hills. You could maybe do 35's, but overdrive would be absolutely worthless. I've driven a 3.0 with 5.71's with the auto tranny, and it was still gutless in overdrive - that's one TALL gear in the tranny! That truck tachs about 500 less RPM at highway speed than my manual tranny 4.56 with 33's!

sweeet. just got me a little curious when numbers didnt match up. so 4.88s mean that my soon to be 32x11.50s will be fine right?

Yep. Speedo will probably be right on too, if my change from 31's to 33's is anything to go off of...

I think the chart shows the most commonly found applications. But as we've seen, Toyota has put out several variations of door jamb stickers, gears, tires, and even speedo cables,, depending upon what year your particular truck or runner was produced.
