problem with driveshaft bolts

a while back, my driveshaft broke out of my 4runner. i would tell you exactly wut happened but i dont have the slightest clue of wut any of that is called. well anyway, i was under my 4runner today changin my oil and tranny fluid and while waiting for them to drain i decided to make sure the bolts on my new driveshaft were tight. the transfercase side were tight but the axle side were ALL hand loose and looked like if they were driven another couple of miles they would of came out. is there a reason for why they would get like this? a good dose of locktight would solve my problem correct?

figured i might as well ask this now instead of starting a new thread. i filled my tranny back up (just did the drain and fill), well i only put about 2 quarts back in minus wut i spilt and i let it all drain down the tube for a lil then checked it and it read full for cold conditions and my tranny was cold at the time. sooo is that enough or should i go ahead and add more?

The only 2 reasons the bolts would come loose if if the lockwashers weren't new when put back on (this happened to me..lol)....or...if your ujoint is bad and it just vibrated and wobbled them loose.

Mine fell off too, because when I changed me ujoints, I used the old lockwashers, like an idiot...

I redid it with new ones and it's been fine since.

I bet you're not using the factory DS bolts/nuts are you?

to change the pink just go all the way down and change the dropdown menu at the bottom left

same thing happen to me a friday. I had to drive home in 4wd. I put new lock washer and new bolts and n\locking nuts for all drive shaft

Are you guys not checking these? They are listed as an item at pretty much every scheduled maintainance interval so Toyota is serious about it.

I agree with Rob (WATRD), it's always a good idea to check the drive line whenever you're underneath your rig.

I just wanted to add 2 things. You don't always need a new lockwasher. Lockwasher is a generic term. Star washers should always be replaced. Spring (or split) washers on the other hand are okay to re-use as long as they haven't lost their "spring". If you notice they are flat you should get new ones, or if you can't at the time, at least take a pair of pliers and put some spring back in them so they bite. Also, there is no need to overtighten these bolts. I've seen guys really wrench on these, and that's simply not necessary.

Kyle, to answer your questions: Yes it's okay to use locktite, but use the medium, not the red. I'd think a new lockwasher would be better however.

You'll want to check your tranny fluid again at operating temperature, running, either in Park or Neutral (not sure what Toyota recommends) and on a level surface. The cold check is okay, but the hot check is the LAW, as on all fluids with cold/hot marks.

ight, thanks for all the help guys. by the way, where can i get a new set of bolts and lockwashers at. will generic bolts from lowes do or should i get toyota stuff?

Go with the factory bolts, I recently read about bolts from hardware stores not meeting up with ratings listed on them. For example: "generic grade 8" when tested turn out to be like a grade 5.

for the cost invovled, id get oem and follow service specs. a few minutes spent now will save plenty of headache later.

a bad u-joint will loosen those things up pretty easily. on my '79 when i pulled the driveshaft to have it rebuilt, 2 of the rear bolts were barely finger tight. u-joints were fried...
