power steering fluid type

I have a 92 4runner 5 speed v6. I need to add some more power steering fluid but I am uncertain which grade to use exactly. I know it takes Dexcon ATF but from reading several posts, do i need I II or III? or does it not matter.

thank you for responding to such a newbie question

If you use DOT III I think it will cover needs for the lower DOT requrements, I think. Someone with a definate answer should be along shortly

the difference between I, II, III, IV, is advancements in technology made between models. IV being the current i believe, dont think you can buy anything less than that. and it might be V now.

I just use the ATF in the parts store that is "formulated for Japanese vehicles". Seems to work fine!

Check the cap...it tells what fluid to put in

Or your owners manual.

Mercon/Dexron 1 supercedes to 2 supercedes to 3. It may be up to 4 now, not sure.

IIRC, Dexron IV and higher are not compatible with III and lower.

Anyways, Dexron III or even "dexron types" is what you need.

...that's what I said. I swore mine said Dextron III and the Castor ATF I got says "For Japanese Vehicles" on it. Anyways glad you got it figured out and didn't end up putting PS fluid in it

Spec should be Dexron III. Dexron IV is backwards compatible as is Dexron V, as is Dexron VI. And Dex/Merc is compatible too and a lot cheaper.

There are three Dexron III compatible fluids that are more viscous than most and are often recommended for power steering. Any of them would be a good choice for a pump that's making noise or a pump that is leaking fluid:

Red Line Synthetic Power Steering Fluid - probably the best all-around choice:
http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=79&pcid=27
http://www.redlineoil.com/content/files/tech/49.pdf

(Normally, you should avoid "Power Steering Fluid" and stick with Dexron ATF, but Red Line's product meets the Dexron III spec.)

Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF):
http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp...s_ImportMV.pdf

and, CHEVRON MULTI-VEHICLE ATF:
https://www.cbest.chevron.com/genera...DS27291691.PDF

If the vehicle is operated in very cold environments, a less viscous synthetic ATF fluid would be a better choice. The best probably is:

AMSOIL Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid:
http://www.syntheticwarehouse.com/Specsheets/ATF.pdf

and, MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC ATF is also very good:
http://www.esso.ca/Canada-English/Fi...thetic_ATF.pdf

Both of these are less viscous (thinner) than the first three mentioned, and would be more liable to have leak issues in warm weather, but they are both excellent fluids.

And now we know why GM won't license "Dexron" for older products- there isn't any consistancy between brands and GM owns the trademark.... and the fact that GM won't license it may be the reason for lack of consistancy.

Personally, I would avoid any synthetic Dexron III compatible fluid.
