Um
BTW - Hummer's have portal "hubs"...
Normally an axle goes to the "center" of the hub.
So the BEST clearance one can have is about 1/2 the height of the tire minus some amount (2" or so?) for the thickness of the axles and the bearings etc.
A PORTAL hub puts GEARS in the hub.
Thus the axle goes to a gear which then drives another gear on the axle stub.
Thus is ALOT of "complexity".
BUT
It gains you a few inches in axle clearance.
A portal axle is heavy (gears) expensive (lots o parts) and thus not very common.
Unimog in the most prevalent solid axle portal axle
Hummer is a "common" IFS/IRS portal "hub".
I have heard of a Volvo axle as well - not sure where it is from.
If you have to ask - you cant afford it.

The ones they're using on Xtreme are Portal-tek ends for a "normal" axle.
You're over $6k for the kit:

4Mogger spent about $20k on his unimog axles, but there was a lot of custom work narrowing them and integrating central tire inflation (I think that price includes the custom rims too)
Long story short, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.
Rockwells are counter to the idea of increased ground clearance ...
For a more cost effective alternative, you should look at a Spidertrax or Diamond housing - those will gain you almost an inch for <$1000.
As for tucking the drivetrain up, search on "drivetrain lift" or "flat belly" on here and 4Crawler

They wont strip or break any easier than any other Full Floater design will. The gears tend to be straight cut as they are industrial in design - NVH isnt going to be a top priority objective on a portal...

TRU DAT GUYS!
Meaning w/out Portals and a heck-uva lot cheaper. Look into BudBuilt first. THEN Portals.... Like TC said. If ya have to ask. Either you are independently wealthy or... well heck Hire me to come out and build it for ya!!!
And lastly... While yes Jessie and Ian know their shizzy... Portals aren't exactly a common man's wheeling material... They are incredibly complex and expensive. For those of you who can afford it... Awesome! For the rest of us... well I'd rather get some diamond axles an SAS, a 3.4, oh and an exo cage.....

Hell, buy my plane ticket and I'll be your axle/gear oil grease lady for a whole week! Troy will even sign off on it!!!
Sorry didn't mean to be an ass about portals. It is just that I have seen 'em in action (as well as the Hummer gear reduction versions) and for that price, I'm not impressed. Ask me about the time that a Buggy with portals blew a R&P in Moab and I jumped underneath in the sand for 2 hours to stem the flow of gear oil in sand??? Towed that brat off of Moab Rim for 4 miles.....

Fair enough! I mean if I am gonna trash portals (which I'm not in general) but for the $$$ there is so much more one can do ya know? So I'll pimp myself out to help before ya spend $30K on Portals and the whole set-up! (Oh and that fee includes getting my 3.4 running in Tippy BTW)
