Plastigage

which plastigage to use? Looking in the Haynes manual. The clearances for the main bearing is 0.0010 to 0.0022 and connecting rid is 0.0010 to 0.0022.

Looking at summit racing for plastigage, it lists the measure at 0.009 to 0.020.

Is that length a misprint? Does anyone have a part number for the exact palstigage i need. I am a bit confused. And this is important for me to know.

Thanks!

If you have an O'Reilly near you, just go there and ask for the green (finest guaging) plastigage.

Otherwise, what Alex said is right. Most likely you're going to find your bearings tolerances to fall somewhere in the middle of the specs. The slight difference you find with the plastigage from summit will not make any difference.....unless, you have some serious engine noise. In which case, you'll probably need some machining which will make the tolerances you find rather moot.

Look at the numbers you have listed, they are virtually the same. Your measurements are guaranteed to fall somewhere in between. If not then your bearings are incorrect. Also the bearings should be marked from the factory with a number printed on the back, order the same bearing or one higher, given there is no crank journal wear. The measurements should be within limits. The difference in the plastiguages is 2/10000's of an inch.

I read up on them online. Personally, i have never used them. I should be getting the block back next week, and want to get the plastigage ordered.

It's quite fragile stuff. If it's broken into pieces, you may still be able to use it. Hopefully, they package it well.
