Ok I've seen the FJ's with roof top tents on them and even a few 4runners with same. I've also seen 4runners with soft tops and pickups with soft tops. What I'm looking for is a soft top for an 86 ext cab pickup that is sturdy enough to hold a roof top tent but NOT made of vinyl that can be rolled up on the sides much like a safari type top.

I know it's a lot to ask but thanks in advance anyway.

You could have a frame around the outside of it to support three to four crossbars by Yakima/Thule, or have tubing on top custom made and skip the other mentioned crossbars.

Custom frame for the tent, and I am sure you could have a soft top made for something like that.

Best bet is get the frame/tubing done, then contact an upholstery shop to fab you up a soft top.
