is it OK to drive truck when speed sensor is not working

Hi Folks, I have a 92 3l automatic pickup that has had the check engine light on intermittently. The odometer and speedo are also not working. The error code is for the speed sensor which I just had replaced, however the speedo and odometer are still not working, so either the speed sensor was actually not the issue, or there is an additional issue that relates to the speedo and odometer. We have a young friend staying with us for a month and wanted to get the truck running OK so that he has a vehicle to use locally during that time. I am wondering if anyone has any clues about what the issue might be and how to fix it. Alternatvely is it OK to continue to drive the truck with this issue not fixed - is it safe, and also is it going to casue a bigger issue - I read somewhere that the speed sensor helps to control when the trans changes gear and that driving with a bad sensor can damage the transmission. At this point I don't really want to put a lot of money into the truck as I have just replace it with a 2001 taco, but am also hoping to pass it on to some friends who want to use it as a farm truck so I am also looking for some sense of whether it is worth them taking it on. thanks for any advice you can offer. Jan

It should not hurt anything. The 92 year model is an electric driven speedometer. If I am correct, there is a sensor on the transmission that can go bad. I would check or replace it.

Thanks Terry. We did already replace the speed sensor. The odometer and speedo are still not working though so that was why I was wondering if it was a separate issue, or does it mean that the speed sensor was not the issue in the first place?
