Just went outside to change the oil on my '86 22RE... when i pulled the old filter, it was wet inside, but it didnt' seem like there was much oil in it. I know its slightly downward angled, so it could have drained back. Is this the case, or do i have oil problems? the oil pressure is good while its running.

If you let it sit long enough before you change oil some of the oil will drain back like you had thought, and your oil pressure is good. You'll be fine.

it sat overnight, like 14 hours... Makes me nervous though. when i pulled it off, it didnt even drip any oil. There was oil inside the filter, but it didn't seem like much. I say the pressure is good... let me rephrase that... the gauge says it has oil pressure. How far i trust the gauge is another question altogether

Seems if the oil pressure is correct and the truck is running fine, you shouldn't worry about a thing. The filter probably just drained.

If when you check the oil at the dipstick it registers fine then you are being paranoid.

the anti-drain back valve on some oil filters are cheap and don't do their job right. I usually use Purolator, but pay more for it. Fram filters only cost a few bucks for a reason . . .

wish i could say i'd spent the money for a fram even... oh well. Probably am paranoid, but can't help myself sometimes. i appreciate the advice folks. if it blows up, i'll tell ya all about it. if not, i might just see you on the trail

It's normal for the filter to be empty'ish/just wet after it's been sitting a while. Every filter I've ever used on my 22re does that. Well, I've only ever used WIX, but out of seven years they've all done that. And, they the have anti-drain valve.

most automotive filters have antidrainback valves...the fram ones just dont seal very well. either way after awhile any filter will drain back into the pan...unless its a filter with the opening upward on the engine

even with the anti-drainback valve, some of the oil will leak backwards through the oil pump. the valve is meant to keep the outlet passages to the block and head filled with oil so that the engine doesn't have to wait as long for oil.

the only cars I've seen with horizontal filters and a drainback valve that worked were my chrysler laser and vw sciroccos. always lost 1/2 cup oil every filter change.

Alot of time you are supposed to run you motor to temp before changing oil for that reason, it makes it easier to change. At least that is what i have been told by a very very experianced mechanic

I think that has been widely accepted practice, but I got tired of burning my fingers/arms a long time ago.

Egh....spoiled sport!.....

One of the main reason to get the motor hot before you drain is so that you get more of the used to drain out. It doesn't drain off as well when cold.

Change it hot to keep contaminates suspended in the oil.
