Egg whites expand when the temperature is high enough AND the pressure is low enough, and black pepper is a nice expansive material too and plugs up holes up to say bigger than a pin hole? ... and neither are corrosive to the system, and pass out rather politely with a flush.

Sooooooo I was just trying to burp the system more. made a mess. I realized I could prevent some of that by putting the "safety" cap on I have open the release valve so any coolant that was pushed out would go to the overflow bottle and air would go outtttt. Seemed to work well.
Now, what it would do. idle fine, blah blah, when there was pressure or something built up, it would start to push coolant out, idle would rev up to 2K rpm like it was cold, it started pushing so much out that it was overflowing the overflow bottle. I directed it with another hose into an empty jug so I could put it back in the radiator. After sitting at 2K rpm for about 60 seconds it would begin to idle down and do that surging rev like it was low on coolant, between 1900 and 1300 rpm. Did that whole thing 4 times, and started a 5th time but I turned it off to come here....There were about 5 minutes between each idle-up.
Each time though it seemed to need less coolant back in the system. Also, the last time it did it before I shut it off, I noticed as it was idling down, the upper radiator hose would collapse, like there is negative pressure somewhere in it. It WAS sucking coolant back into the system as it was idling down as well.

Once again. ran it with the heat on cold and the fan off. drove 5 miles at operating temp. Got home, 20 minutes later, it still has not pushed any coolant into the overflow. But run it with the heater on. it will push it out, whether I'm driving or after I park and turn it off.

Can a clogged heater line, heater core, etc, cause this?
I started to tear down the engine to do a head gasket change. Got partway into it, a few stuck bolts and got discouraged. Plus, it was getting late and chilly (35F). I decided to try to torque the head bolts down and call it good. I noticed the middle 6 bolts were somewhat looser than the others. Torqued them all down to 60ft/lbs. Got it all back together and filled, started to burp the cooling system. Its still pretty much doing the same thing. High idle, then surging idle, then comes down. All the while pushing the coolant out. I'm really frustrated!

So the cooling system seems to be holding pressure after the engine is turned off. All last week and today after work I go to leave, check my coolant, a little has been pushed out, seems some is just gone, but when I open the radiator cap release valve, it pushed quite a bit into the overflow. This is 4-4.5 hours later. Doesnt seem to be burning any as the exhaust is never white except after sitting all night, which is normal considering its still getting below freezing. It doesnt BILLOW white exhaust. I have looked all around trying to find a leak spot.

It held enough pressure to shoot about 2 cups of coolant into the overflow when I opened the cap after sitting all night. Seems like if it were a HG leak it would loose pressure through the HG, would it not?

I know I have. I just don't have at least 99% certainty that its the HG. I haven't pressure tested the cooling system yet. I don't really have a way to do that other than go to a shop. To me, the only sign that it could be the HG is that its pushing coolant into the overflow. All the other problems could be caused by other things, as could the coolant being pushed into the overflow. There are no mixing of fluids. Compression tests were right around 160 across the board. No white smoke. No smell. Plugs are worn normally. Plus, it ONLY overheats WHEN THE HEAT IS ON.

On a cold start, mine goes up to about half way then drops back down to about 1/4 ONLY when the heat is on.
It was worse before I put in a dual stage thermostat. It seems to run cooler when the heat is OFF.
I've never had any coolant issues or anything like that but maybe there is a chance your heater core is clogged I guess, have you put in a dual stage thermo yet?

I'm fairly certain I do NOT need a dual stage thermo. I got a brand new OEM single as the first repair when this happened. My old one was working fine, evident by putting it in boiling water. I havent tried driving with the heat on in about 2 weeks because of this, thank go it has been warm. I think I will try to find some coolant tester stuff to see if there is the presence of exhaust gases in my coolant.

Okay. I'm very certain its the HG now. I went to leave for work, started her up idled rough and--



This was after about 5 minutes of running. It was worse when I first started it up. Its definitely not condensation anymore, considering its about 45F right now.

What was behind the block drain bolt. Its almost as hard as steel. I had to use a drill to get through it. Don't know what the heck it is. Just muck...
