Noise in 4WD only
#1
I drive an 89 first gen, 22re, 5spd. I have a 2 weird noises coming from my shifter/tranny/transfer case area when I'm in 4WD. The best way to describe one is it sounds like when you get engine noise through your speakers. The other noise sounds like a "slushing" noise. It's hard to describe, but it sounds like a case that has a chain drive that might be loose or stretched and rubbing against the case housing. It's not really a grating, just, for lack of a better word, a slushy sound. I keep everything lubed regularly so I don't think it's that. I, also, just had the case drained and filled in November 2005. The Toy tech didn't mention anything about flakes or chunks in the fluid. Hopefully he was paying attention.
Is my transfer case chain driven? Any ideas on what the noises are and where they are coming from? Or are these noises normal? I've searched the board, but what I found doesn't match what I have going on at all and the matches are not even close.

Hey, TP, I just saw your thread and can't believe that no one has helped you yet. I don't know much about the transfer case, but I can't help but think that there is a problem with the service done by the tech? Maybe you need to go to another shop and have them check it out.
Anyone else?

Thanks for the reply. I noticed the sound before I took it in so I don't think he screwed it up. It may just be time for a rebuild or something. I think the guy who had it before me used the 4WD a good bit, but I know he took excellent care of it. I use it every once in a while, especially during hunting season. I just don't seem to have time to take it out as much as I would like, but I do put it in 4WD once a month just to keep everything lubed. Parts do wear out, though, no matter how well they're serviced. Thanks again!
