newb questions

My family has had a 86 toyota truck since it was new, it's a 4cyl 5 speed 4x4 and the mechanic says it has a cracked block, My dad recently gave me the truck and said I could do what I want with it, what motor does it have, what do you recomend i do to it? Whats the best place to find a motor? It's going to be a hunting rig and toy to mess around with, it'll probly get drove all the time. I'm very mechanicly inclined and have built jeeps and other trucks. thanks alot

should be a 22r or 22re. if it's carb'd, it's the 22r, efi=22re.
there should be a sticker under the hood though.

question though- how does the mechanic know it's a cracked block?

Good point, abecedarian. Cracked blocks are rare on 22R/RE's.

I'm pretty sure he's just guessing, I know when it went to him it had a blown head gasket, and he had it for a couple months and never fixed it so we just went and got it. now the motor it completly torn down, I'm just looking for a starting point.

if you've got the block, take it to a different shop and have it tanked and magnafluxed. it'll cost you a bit, but not a lot.

You can pick up a used 22RE for about $500. Pretty simple swap - lots of room and not too many connectors. I'd guess probably 10 hours for a shop, or a weekend with an engine crane & a paved driveway. If it's in good shape, it's definitely worth fixing.

I would really get a second opinion from a different mechanic ... I have an uncle that told me I had the same problem ,but instead It was a freeze plug .. I know for a fact he knew the difference because he's a mechanic .He obviously just wanted the motor . I've seen people do that a lot where I've from .

I think your starting point should be to go back to that mechanic and stomp a mud hole in his guts for tearing apart a motor and letting it sit for months.

After that follow the direction of the other posters and either get it checked or get a replacement motor.

they're not all that rare around here in southern california, but ones with less than 100k miles are, and I've even seen some with 150k going for 1000 at salvage yards. kind of rediculous considering you can rebuild one for the same or even less than that barring serious mechanical problems. I've seen some yards going so far as basic re-ring, head gasket and timing chain and trying to get 1500-2000 which is nuts considering I can get an autozone reman with warrantee for 1300-1800
