NewB 94 4runner owner
I started looking at 4runners about 4 weeks ago and settled on one about a week ago. It is a 94 Green 3.0 auto with the 31 tire package and the 4.88 gears. I will post pics once I get the running boards off. I have been reading this board and collecting alot of info prior to my purchase.
I settled on the 2nd Gen mainly because I prefer a tail gate. I hunt and camp and plan to sleep in the back and it is nice to leave your boats on the tailgate at night and use it to sit on when you wake and get dressed. I had the money to spend on the 3rd Gen but wanted to keep my costs down. I am the second owner.
History on the vehicle. The PO had the HG replaced under warranty at 62K and again at 119K. They installed a used Japanese motor and tranny at 144K. The steering Rod was done at 161K. They have all the receipts for routine maintenance and everything was done at the Stealer. Other then the bad luck with the motor, it is obvious looking at this vehicle and maintenance records that it was very well maintained.
My girl friend works for an auto repair facility and I have them going through the vehicle. They replaced all 4 shocks and put Moog springs in the rear. A couple of things that they found concern me:
First, they checked the timing belt and it was on it's last leg. The odd thing is it was cracked on the outside rather then the inside where it is against the pully. I am wondering if this motor sat awhile? I have them replacing the water pump, all belts, oil pump, and front seals.
Second, they said it did not have a thermastat. The PO had installed a new radiator and my guess is the person that did it forgot to install a new thermastat. Or were they trying to cover up some kind of over heating problem?
Third, the transmission needed to be flushed. This was just installed in Dec and only has about 2k on the tranny since the install. The outside of the tranny was very clean and I am surprised they would install it and not flush it with new fluid.
I should get it back tomorrow. I will post an update and cost of the work done. I know from previous work that they give me a heck of a great price.
