new to me 1986 4runner
ok well im going into the navy i just transferd out of the army so now i have to move not to sure on where yet and my fiance wants to get married before we leave so kids are in our future. so ive been looking for a new yota well new to me anyway and after months of lookin i found a 1986 4runner motor was rebuilt at 205,000 miles at toyota i saw the service record from that the runner has 220,000 miles on it it was repainted last december and he rhino lined the entire floor of it. it is stock height (if i get it it wont be haha) it white looks amazing it has new rubber, brakes, rotors, brake lines front and back and new bearings on all wheels 4x4 works great everything works amazing. it idles so smoothly you have to look at the tach to make sure its running it has all new head light and new bulbs. he is askin 4850 what do yall think is that to much, not enough, perfect what i dont know much about runners so anything i should be lookin for would great. also i forgot he had the p/s pump rebuilt and new pitman arms.

I think that $4850 is pretty damn expensive for a stock rig. New engine or not.
Have you looked at this one?

Or, if you want one already done you can buy John's

he may have put that much money into it, but it is not worth that much, period.
Also with a family coming, i would suggest a 90 to 95 first, then a 96 to 2001.
Try to find a 95, with a 22re engine in it, 2 wd, with automatic; they can get pretty amazing gas mileage in this config. They will also have 4 doors, 2 doors are just a hassle, even though I am a loner driving it, on my 88'. Also, the back
lift gate is just that; lifts up and down, you cannot open it, with the window up, and then when you roll it down, you have to flip up the little arm, then drop the gate. Not sure how the 90 to 95 rear gates and window operates, but it has to be better than this... 95 is the last year of the 22re engine.
Better yet, if you can find one with a little diesel engine in it, then I would go 4500.00 for that!!!
Oh yeah, 1st gens are easy to break into, almost any older toyota key will turn the ignition, and the
CAT's are easy to steel off of them, not to mention the tire underneath. plus you better make sure the dude has the complete tire removal kit, to crank the wheel up and down with.

22RE 4runners are pretty rare from 1990-1995. If you can find one, avoid the A/T. I would avoid the A/T even if you got a V6 as well since they rob power from an already underpowered rig.

X2, 4cyl/auto 2nd gens are a bad idea unless you like being passed by Geo's and minivans ...downhill....

I've got an '86, bought stock and have enjoy learning and wrenching on it. Honestly you will save a fortune if you buy one that is built rather than stock and then building it up. Take your time and reseach what you want, what do you plan to do with the rig.
I'm now needing to put a child seat in the back, its going to be quite the task of getting in and out. Not something that will be ideal for quick in and out trips. But I got quite a bit of lift. I kinda wish I'd gone with a later 4 door model.
Even with a fresh rebuilt motor there is so many things that will need to be inspected and possibly replace. IMHO the price is a bit high. Besides with a stock rebuild you miss out on a few upgrades that could have been done.
Into the Navy, LOL.

He's got plenty of other interested parties as well. Ideally, he'll be able to trade for the right rig though. Its definitely worth the price.
Everyone uses the economy as a crutch. That isn't it at all. Still plenty of money going around. Stock market back up to 10,500+ and people are spending money. I sold my 88' for $10K at the end of July (when the economy was worse), so its all about finding the right buyer for it. Someone looking for a super clean, yet built rig, will pay for the right one. Its as simple as that.

Stock market has nothing to do with the 16 million unemployed.Try telling a guy standing in the unemployment line that hes using the bad economy as a crutch to not buy something.

It really doesn't matter though as John doesn't have to sell it, and would rather trade anyway. IMO, his 4runner won't decrease in value as time goes by because its becoming a classic. It will only go up. Especially in that kind of condition.

do NOT get a 1st gen runner to haul your kid around with....it's not the "safest" vehicle to be trusting with your kid...a 2nd gen runner would be a little better and have 4 doors..a 3rd gen runner would be even better dude.
yes yes yes i know what your saying though..everybody wants a 1st gen runner (even me LOL) but i wouldn't trust it with my kid (if i had one), hell idk if i would even trust my 2nd gen runner!

I'd have to recommend getting a newer runner with 4 doors (1992 and up I think) for ease of getting the car seats/kids/dogs/etc in there. The first gens with the removable tops are neat but not really family friendly. Try and find one with the 22re and 5 speed as others here have mentioned.
My honest opinion is that 4850$ is way too much for a stock rig. (I paid 1500$for mine) I also want to point out that you will save a lot of time and money by buying a rig that has already been done by a professional.

2nd gen 4runners started in 1990 junkers LOL
heck even BETTER than a 3rd gen runner...a 4 Door Tacoma!!!!!!! lol but they're expensive (don't get much lower than about $12,000 around here..no matter how many miles it has on it)
