New to 4Runner, help

Ok Im new to this forum but not to Toyota's. Had two pickups several years ago, 84 4WD and an 87 4wd Turbo, and never should have sold them. After several years of playing in the nissan world and having built 4 240SX's myself (Black top SR 417whp, 2 RB25's 373whp and 508whp and my current CA18 544whp) I have come back home to a Yota. Problem is Im new to this 3VZ-A340H combo and would like a little insight to my current problem before I go spending money. I have searched and searched and not really found anything that's hit the nail on the head for me so Im asking. The trans in my 4runner has been slipping a little here recently, more so when its cold. Well today it decided forward was going to be no more. I put it in drive and rev it like my CA18 just to get it to creep forward. When I put it in reverse it shifts and pulls just fine, just no more forward. Now Im no auto-trans guy. My best understanding of one is as follows: Pump, fluid, witchcraft, unicorn horns then forward happens... ... strange!!! So any help is greatly appreciated, and believe me... I could use it too.

If any one gear works and any one gear doesn't. "It's dead Jim!"

Drop it drain it wash out the metal shavings and rebuild. But I think you already knew this, no amount of voodoo is going to help it.

Only other thing I might suggest is to make sure fluid level is correct. Does the fluid have a burnt smell? Dont know the Toyota auto, this is just from other models, but it isnt looking good. I would try to see if changing a filter in it if it has one just for one last bit of hope.

1 of your shift solenoids is bad, I believe. Drain the tranny, drop the pan and check them. There are a few places where you can download the FSM's, do a search for them....

Yeah I already did a pan drop/filter swap which is about my knowledge of autos ends. Just never been balls deep into one before. I have heard of the solenoids causing problems which is why I asked on here after searching. I didnt find anything that really nailed anything down for me. My borg warner rebuild kit came in thursday and all 3 of my solenoids and OE torque converter should be in tuesday. Im having a buddy of my dads that works at R&R speed and machine build it for me since his claim to fame has been 40+ years of autofied goodness
