Well after doing days of looking on the net for someone with the same type of surging problem as me I had no luck. My celica only surges while I press the gas pedal. So I went to autozone looked at a haynes and it said its either an intake leak or my fuel pump. So I replaced all of my 25 year old vaccumm lines I bought an adapter plate to make a cold air intake and I solved any problems that would have cause intake leak. And it still surged. So next pay check ill buy a fuel pump drop the tank and put it in and ill let you know how it goes. P.s. I saw a clean 77 celica gt at work yesterday it was bad ass

 

Any more info on why the alternator wire was causing this? Which wire?

 

put a fuel pressure test guage one the fuel line before you go drop the money on the pump.. you can get one pretty cheap from harbor frieght tools

and with some efi ruber house clamps and some fittings from hardware store you will be able to read your fuel pressure buy giving power to fuel pump when you turn the key all the way forward...

now you may have a bad seal on the fuel pump and are sucking air into the fuel line...

maybe not the problem but its always a possiblity

 

Thanx for that sugestion. If it is the pump seal don't new pumps come with the seal? If so than iam coverd. Iam sure the pump that's in there is origonal so its not bad to just replace it now. I know its a lot of money. But I want to convert my celica into a drifter. After I get it running the way it should. Ill be looking in forums for info on how to do it

 

@leifhill- Replacing all the vacuum lines may not fix a vacuum leak: it could be a vacuum leak inside one of the many components connected to said lines such as any of the vacuum switching valves (i.e. for EGR, air conditioner, etc.), distributor advance canister diaphragm, power brake servo (booster), etc. A worn distributor could affect the engine in such a way, as could restricted exhaust, failing O2 sensor, failing air-flow meter....

 

Oh of course that wasn't my intent. But I knew that the lines needed replacing they were weather rotten. Iam sure the surging I have is from lack of fuel preassure it just feels that way.

 

The alternator blug the black one that goes to the back of the alternator wasnt clipped all the way in and so it wast keedping the battery 100% charged while it was running so the EFI was getting poor throttle response and surging very bad and when u drove it u had absolutley no power and i also replaced the fuel filter to bring my low fuel pressure up and i would reccomend you guys doing that before you buy a new pump their like 15 bucks and brought my pressure up by like 10lbs

 

i have the same problem i have replaced everything it still does the same thing

 

have you checked your coolant level? if it is low it could cause the vehicle to rev up and down at idle.

 

Easiest thing I've found so far is unplug the tps and see if it stops. How I fixed the truck I had when I was talking about this.
