Neither fuel gauage or temp guage work!

Just brought an 86 Runner home and starting making my list of things to do. Noticed that both the fuel and temperature guage do not work. I looked brreifly at the FSM wiring diagram and then took out the cluster to determine if there was a bad trace or other obvious cause. Everthing checked out with an ohm meter and hit the two guages with 12 V breifly. Both needles moved quickly. Any got an idea on what to troubleshoot in this case?

Ive had sending units go bad on the temp gauge before causing them to not work or not work properly. Same goes for the gas gauge, the sending unit can also go bad, but check the wiring that goes to the tank for the sending unit.

Checked the wiring with ohm meter all the way back to the sending units. I looked at the schematics in the FSM and can see that both meter inputs have a common input and suspect that since both don't work, this may be a clue. Have not made any progress other this. Suggestions? Which thermistor is actually being read as engine temperature? Is it the one in the coolant line housing the thermostat, the one on the passenger side of the block, or the one next to the cold start temp sensor?

I was having the same issue and it turned out to be a bad power connection at the battery. It was the small blue wire that comes off of the + side of the battery.

I am not seeing a small blue wire off the battery terminal. Or did you mean off the battery side if the main fuse?
