First off i did search, but couldnt find anything useful or that i hadnt already tried.

I recently bought my first 4runner, a 94, and began doing the routine maintenance. I changed all the fluids, timing belt, water pump, radiator, valve cover gaskets, cleaned the intake, and changed all the brakes.

Now i'm having some brake issues. i put new pads and rotors on the front and new drums on the rear. when i press the brake pedal the truck shudders. The steering wheel DOES NOT shake and the truck does not shake or pull side to side. it feels like the brakes are pulsing. it would be like pressing and releasing the pedal very quickly (but is not the ABS).

Anyone have similar issues or ideas?

also, is it common for the brake pads on these to overlap or extend past the outer edge of the rotors? the old pads did, as did the new hardware.

 

Did the brakes do this BEFORE you added new pads/rotors and drums?

 

did you wipe the drums and rotors down with cleaner ,to make sure that there wasn't any oil or other contaminants on them? this could cause it to shudder.

 

honestly, i do not know / remember if it was doing this exact thing before, but the front brakes were in such bad shape, they were toast. i just expected it to all clear up after new brakes, and an alignment. I did clean everything before putting it back together. I've been working on cars for a long time and never come across this, which is why i asked.

 

when you installed the rotors ,could something have caused one of them not to set flat on the hub?

 

I Have the same exact problem and I can't figure it out either. The front rotors look fine. I ran a dial indicator on them and they are only .002 out so that shouldn't be bad enough to cause anything. I took the back drums off and they seem to be just fine as well.

Have you figured anything out on this issue?
