Need opinion
I recently saw a 80 Toyota pickup for sales. Price was 3 k. Had 22r swapped into it with a 5 speed. Truck was fairly rust free and needs a lot of little things like new windshield, wiper motor and a carb adjustment to be road ready. Truck came from the factory with Ac but didn't have compressor setup and going. I currently have a 89 4 runner 3vze that runs fairly well and I'm happy with it but I really need a truck. I've noticed the majority of people own 84 -89 runners or pickups. Is this body style just way more popular and valuable ? I'm thinking of selling to get the 80 pickup. Is there any reason I shouldn't. I've never really liked any other body styles but this truck looks pretty awesome . Has any others switched generations. Would I regret switching to the 80 pickup?

Well it is your call.
i would bet till you get fixing all the little things on this new truck you will easily get another $2000.00 plus into the vehicle.
Sounds like it was not taken very good care of or else it was used hard and neglected.
Thing is if you really need this you have all ready made up your mind.

Possibly was, but I've never seen one with little to no rust like this one. Is the first generation any more valuable. Or should I just start looking for a 84 to 88 pickup. I really want an extended cab, but that seems to be tough to find

To me the only way one of those pick ups would be worth any money is if it was perfect and all original with very low mileage .
But there is always someone coming along that will pay top dollar.
I sold a rough but running 1983 for $300.00 some time last year to keep it going from the crushers.
It might be nice to know just where you are ??
It all comes down to just what you want and how much work you can do yourself.
It also helps to have a place to do the work.
Do you need a daily driver or can this be a fun project I know it gets real old trying to get things done when you need to go to work.
It comes down to paying more for a well maintained vehicle or buying one that you know is going to be a project going in. Then even the well maintained ones can go to project status real quick.

This is in Texas. My runner is currently my dd but I do have a car I use when it's in need of work. It seems like the 4 runners and pickups are fairly easy to come by, I hardly ever see the first gen pickups for sale or around. Are they any more coveted? Also on the forums there's like 180 viewing my gen 4 runner. There's like 12 on the pre 84 pickup forum

My buddy bought a 1982 4x4 22r manual long bed, 38,000 original miles for $1500 about 3 years ago. This is in south east PA, I know these yota pickups values vary greatly depending on what part of the country you're in.
That being said, I paid $3500 for a 1992 ext cab 3vze 4x4 auto sr5 with 150,000 miles three years ago and have put atleast that much in it thus far.

Yeah I've read about people buying for 800, that's why I'm wondering if its way over priced. It has 35's on it. I wouldn't think the 22r could take the stress.

I like the look of shortbeds. Around here in Idaho they vary from $600-3500. I paid 950 for mine non running then put another 8 or 9 into it. So after everything was said and done it was probably around $2000 and there's lots more to do...
