need help BAD, terrible idle and smoke
So tonight i decided to put in my new $67 radiator i posted up in another thread (looks identical to the OE part BTW, good stuff) Before i did so i pulled my EGR to see if i could clean it out or just take a look at it. Pulled it out and opened the lid- filter thing looked cruddy so i peeled a layer or two off and put it all back just like it was. Put radiator in but i didnt plan on installing today so dont have any coolant. Went to crank up my truck to move out of the shop(has been running perfectly fine since this) and it cranks right away but idling up and down constantly from 2000 back down to 1500 rpms and white smoke , also smells like oil burning or something. Turned it off immediately and check all vacuum lines. found one with a crack and with relief i cut the end off and it had enough slack to reattach. Reset computer just for the hell of it and tried again.. same thing Im really kicking myself for whatever ive done, shouldnt have messed with anything and i would have been fine. does this sound like the EGR valve? I hate to have to buy another one but this is my only ride so ill buy one if i have to. can anybody please help or offer any suggestions as to what it sounds like? thats really all ive messed with and ive double checked all else under the hood. im going outside to pull codes and see if anything comes up .

i would imagine your getting some funny signals to the coolant temp sensor, which is what control fast idle.... and you stand a good chane of buring up a water pump if you run it dry, as well as warping a head... go out and buy some coolant and try agian.

i feel like a dumbass but it was the lack of coolant that caused the idle and smoke problem. left church this morning and hauled over to autozone to pick up some coolant and new radiator cap. filled her up and no problems at all. still hard to believe that it got that hot just running for like 5 seconds No damage done as far as i can tell, truck runs great and i appreciate your reply AH64ID.
